[Interview] Director Kim Mi-jin, Jinsong Gallery, a painter who paints ‘Dream & Hope’

I'm just happy to draw... Depression, inflammation in humans disappears

“I want many people to come to my gallery and feel the happiness I feel”

Kim Mi-jin, a painter who paints ‘Dream & Hope’, opened ‘Jinsong Gallery’, the first private art gallery in Anyang, on May 17 this year. On the day of her gallery opening, her first exhibition of her own was also held in her gallery. He majored in business administration at university and has been in business for a long time. On October 5th, I met artist Mijin Kim at Jinsong Gallery and asked why she paints, what is good for drawing, why she started her business, and why she opened the gallery. The following is a Q&A with Kim Mi-jin.

What motivated you to paint?

“I like to read books. I often write book reviews while reading various kinds of books, but the illustrations of the books often catch my eye. Sometimes the illustrations in the book don't match the context of the book, so I feel bored.

Although there are fewer illustrations for books by famous authors, there are too many illustrations that are usually forced to fit in the illustrations of people who work in business. Such a picture caught my eye, so I thought about how I would like to draw the picture myself.

Apart from that, I am so sad that I have been in the funeral business for 20 years. always in the dark I started drawing because I thought it would be good to direct bright dreams and hopes.”

Why did you open the first private art gallery in Anyang?

“From 6 or 7 years ago, I received painting training from a German teacher for 4 hours every Saturday. Others went to Europe or went to school, but because they were business people, they couldn't focus on art. Vaguely, when I was a teenager, it was also my dream to have a gallery.

There are many painters in Anyang and many people involved in art-related associations, but the barrier to art is high. Ordinary people find it difficult to visit galleries. Even if you leave the gallery door open, you won't be able to come in.

Having been in business for a long time, I thought that I could do business with paintings.

Since I painted with a happy heart, I want to share that happiness with others and sell it. I want more people to feel happy when they see my drawings. That is the reason why I drew abstract paintings instead of still lifes or portraits. I want to express my happy heart as I want and share it with someone. A photograph is the most accurate way to draw a tree yourself. There are people who draw in detail with pictures, but I think it's boring.

Abstraction can contain many thoughts, dreams and hopes. Still life paintings are pretty and identical, but they can only give you this feeling, but abstract paintings allow you to think. What the hell is this? What the hell does this feel like? I think about it and I think about it.

However, even if it is an abstract painting, it is difficult to draw in too much detail. Looking at the pictures I drew, they said that they liked the bright colors, and seeing their bright expressions makes me happy as well. Abstraction is all about imagination.

I started a gallery because I wanted to make money while drawing my favorite pictures, and I hope that many people would come and feel the happiness I feel.”

How much do you get paid for a painting?

“My paintings usually cost between 2 and 3 million won.

At the first exhibition, an art critic came and asked, “How much will you be paid for the painting?” A lot of people in Anyang don't know much about painting, so I was surprised to hear that they were trying to get around 2~3 million won. ‘How can this painting cost 2-3 million won? Why are you receiving a painting that deserves at least 6-7 million won?” Of course, the price depends on the artist's mind.

We also received requests for donations from government offices. I am considering a donation request from Gunpo City Hall.

You can give one or two as gifts, but you can't donate them all in a capitalist society where everything is commercialized. It is said that paintings are not taken for free. Painting is not only about drawing, but it also takes a lot of effort to represent it. I cut out all the parts by hand to the size I want. It takes a lot of force that hurts my wrist.”

He has been in the funeral business for over 20 years. How did you get into the funeral business?

“My husband’s business failed, so I had to work. One day, I visited a friend who was a plastic surgeon in Ilsan. A friend of mine who came that day asked me, 'What are you doing? So, when I said, 'I am looking for a job because my husband's business has gone down,' he told me to go to my husband's office with his resume. She was the wife of the ossuary president he was. She started her job thanks to him. After 6 or 7 months, the company was organized and the president took good care of me, so I received a lot of support.

With such an opportunity, she also ran a burial company that handles ossuary. However, since low-cost ossuary is created in various cities as municipalities, expensive ossuary is not available. The company became difficult, and as I started a mutual aid company, I experienced more failures.

I thought it could be done like the Jangji Company, but it wasn't. I had to say something like, ‘Please help me,’ but the business didn’t go well because I couldn’t say something that I regret. I am still in that company, but it is difficult.”

Are you still working on your work?

"Yes. Outside of business hours during the day, I paint a lot at night.”

why do you draw

“I am just happy to draw. That's one thing. I often can't sleep because of the complicated things that get tangled up with a lot of people during the day because of business. The customers you meet in the funeral business are usually those who have been hurt, and they want others to know about their grief. Also stubborn and uncaring. Even a small mistake often results in several times more rewards. Seeing the realities of human beings all the time has led to inflammation and depression. I relieved all depression and inflammation while painting.”

what do you draw

“All my projects in the gallery are dreams and hopes. Dreams come true only when there is always a dream and hope. It seems that I have a lot of longing for happiness.”

How do you express your dreams and hopes?

“Dreams and hopes are design. I am designing my future. Drawing has a purpose. At first, I drew because I was happy, but the moment I started drawing, I started designing. The next step is to enter into the hope that someone can share the happiness that I enjoyed. The next thing is that I want that person to like my work and buy it.

Dreams and hopes are not abstract, but design for the future and reality are combined in a complex way.

Eight years ago, someone said that I was the one who gave my dreams and hopes. At that time, I also thought that dreams and hopes were abstract, but as I live my life, that is not the case. Someone sees me and calls me dreams and hopes, but I thought that I had to be more dedicated to become that person’s dreams and hopes.”

How do you express it with color?

“Not only me, but everyone else’s drawings change. It is my intention, but if you keep drawing, you can create completely different shapes because you are moving with your imagination and inspiration. It is also abstract.

I tried to draw a train, but the winged train is drawn and it keeps changing. It changes, but no matter how it changes, if the artist says he wants to express his dreams and hopes, someone will look at the painting and say, ‘It’s really bright. happy. The spirit of ‘feeling dreams and hopes’ comes into play.”

The artist drew it with that intention, but can the viewer not feel it?

“It is entirely up to you. The viewer and the artist cannot match, so I title my painting with the meaning that it was drawn with this intention.”

Could it be the author's problem? Could it be that the audience didn't feel it because it wasn't expressed properly?

“I still don't understand all of Picasso's paintings. However, some people can feel that the lines are well drawn. Some people like the color alone and may buy the painting. Some people may like a painting because of a single dot.

There is nothing wrong with expressing the work well. Since the writer is not a god, he cannot satisfy everyone's needs. It’s just a gathering of people who like me.”

What are your future dreams as an artist?

“I want to become a person who can sell my paintings at high prices to people who can buy my paintings at high prices by raising my own skills and values.

Now I come to the gallery and say, ‘It’s so pretty. There are too many people who say it’s pretty, but can’t buy a painting.

I want to enter a society where there are a lot of people who can buy my paintings when they understand my paintings and want to hang them in the living room where they live.”
