알고 보면 각자는 그의 의식(意識)이 주인이라고 할 수 있다. 내가 변하기로 마음먹으면 기존의 생각과 다른 생각을 해야 한다. 즉 의식이 달라져야 한다. 종(種)으로서의 인간의 의식이 달라지면서 인류는 전과 다른 사회를 만들어왔다. 전통적인 왕정이 없어지면서 인류 사회는 차원이 달라진 역사를 쓰게 됐다.

지금은 지구촌이 또 다른 차원적 변화 앞에 서있다고 전문가들은 진단한다. 이에 따라 인간 종의 의식이 차원적 변화를 해야 새로운 문명을 감당할 수 있다고 한다. 그러려면 강력한 사회적 체험이 필요하다. 필자는 12.3 비상사태에서 그 가능성을 보고 있다.

세계를 놀라게 한 빛의 시위

윤석열의 비상계엄에 반대하는 시위가 알록달록 아름다운 응원봉 빛의 시위를 만들었다. 백만, 이백만이 모이면서도 K-pop을 노래하고 춤추면서 축제 같은 시위를 만든 것이다. 사건 하나 없고 쓰레기 없는 그런 시위는 외국인들을 경악하게 했다. 서구에서 많은 사람들이 모인 시위는 폭동으로 끝나는 게 당연하기 때문이다. 추운 한겨울 밤, 눈을 덮어쓴 키세스 시위단은 세계인을 감동시켰다.

서구의 지성 중에는 빛의 혁명으로 진화한 새로운 시위 정신은 인간 종의 의식을 한 차원 고양시켰다고 진단하는 사람도 있다. 노동조합이나 정당의 정치인과 대표가 선두에서 주도하는 시위가 아니라 자율적으로 모인 익명의 개인들이 평화 시위를 지금까지 계속하고 있다. 수많은 깃발들은 조직이나 단체가 이마에 질끈 동여맨 비장한 구호를 쓰지 않았다. 예를 들면 ‘전국삼각김밥미식가협회’, ‘전국계란은완숙협회’, ‘제발, 아무것도 안 하고 싶은 사람들의 모임’, ‘전국 과체중 고양이 연합’, ‘전국수족냉증연합’ 등이 있다. 조선시대에 양반들 앞에서 탈춤을 추면서 양반들을 비꼬고 놀리던 가사가 생각난다. 하회탈을 보고 있으면 비장미가 아니라 삶을 관조하면서 해학으로 넘어가는 여여한 정신의 초월성이 느껴진다.

또 다른 놀라운 1.19 법원 폭동

놀랍게도 이와 정반대되는 시위도 있었다. 모든 것은 대칭으로 되어 있는 우주처럼 세계에서 유례가 없는 법원을 부시는 폭력 시위가 일어났다. 정권을 무너뜨린 4.19 등 대규모 시위에서도 법원을 습격하지는 않았었다. 법체계의 존중은 한 사회의 마지노선을 담보하는 최종 질서를 의미한다. 이런 암묵적인 규칙이 무너진 것이다.

세계는 야누스의 얼굴처럼 한국에서 일어난 극단적인 두 시위 현상에 놀라움을 금치 못했다. 윤석열은 구속되어 있지만 아직은 대통령직을 유지하고 있다. 야심 찬 종교 지도자가 배후에서 폭력 시위를 조장하고 있다. 윤석열 또한 여론전으로 탄핵 반대 시위를 조종하며 국민을 분열시키고 있다.

탄핵 반대 시위는 처음보다 세를 늘려가고 있다. 군인들이 창문을 부수고 국회의사당을 난입하는 장면은 실시간으로 전국민이 보았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 탄핵 반대시위가 힘을 받으면서 내란을 걱정하는 사람들도 생겨나고 있다. 나치즘이 합법적으로 권력을 잡은 사실이 자꾸 떠오른다.

인간 종이 만들어내는 의식은 개인의 의식과 달리 집단지성으로 나타나 결론을 낸다. 12월 3일 비상계엄이 선포되고 윤석열 탄핵 찬성과 탄핵 반대 시위는 지금도 계속되고 있다. 의식이 혼란스러울 정도로 사회적 위기감이 느껴진다. 그러나 큰 위기를 잘 해결해 내면 큰 배움이 뒤따르며 자신감이 생긴다.

비교는 배움에 효과적인 방법이다

짧은 시간에 겪는 정반대의 시위 앞에서 한국인은 많은 생각을 할 수 밖에 없다. 어른들은 젊은이들이 현실의 문제에 무관심하고 개인의 행복에 머문 좁은 시야를 걱정했었다. 정작 MZ 세대가 보여준 시위는 한 차원 진화한 격이 다른 시위문화를 보여주었다. 감히 이런 시위는 기성세대는 상상하기 힘든 것이었다.

다행히 법원이 계획표에 맞춰서 차근차근 이성적으로 이 사태를 종결해나가고 있다. 로마처럼 내란이 백년을 이어간다면 비교를 통한 배움으로 새로운 의식이 나타나기 힘들 것이다.

올 전반기에 탄핵 심판 선고가 내려지고 대선으로 이어질 것이다. 대비되는 윤석열과 이재명, 국민의 힘과 더불어민주당, 서로 다른 두 시위의 격조(格調), 역사를 관통하는 기득권과 민중의 역동 등이 짧은 시간에 펼쳐지면서 선명하게 비교되어 의식의 확장이 이루어질 수 있다. 중요한 사태를 부정이 아닌 긍정적 해석으로 역사를 주도적으로 선택하는 것도 국민의 역량이다.

멀리 보면 이번 사태는 한국민에게 불행이 아닌 축복의 기회일 수 있다. 개인이든 집단이든 의식이 곧 주인이기 때문이다. 칼 융은 한 곳에서 일어난 일은 동시성 원리로 다른 곳에서도 일어난다고 한다. 새로운 의식을 장착한 한국인은 이제 K-culture를 넘어 K-철학으로 변환기에 역사의 지표를 세우게 될 것으로 필자는 예견한다.

A demonstration of light that surprised the world

The demonstration against Yoon Seok-yeol's martial law created a colorful and beautiful demonstration of light. A million or two million people gathered, singing and dancing to K-pop, creating a festival-like demonstration. Such a demonstration, which had no incidents and no trash, astonished foreigners. In the West, protests with large crowds naturally end in riots. On a cold midwinter night, the Kiss protesters covered in snow moved people all over the world.

Some Western intellectuals diagnose that the new spirit of protest that evolved through the revolution of light has elevated the consciousness of the human species to a higher level. Rather than protests led by politicians and representatives of labor unions or political parties, anonymous individuals who gathered voluntarily have continued to peacefully protest to this day. However, if a great crisis is resolved well, great learning follows and confidence is gained.

Comparison is an effective way to learn.

Koreans cannot help but think a lot in the face of the opposite protests that occur in a short period of time. Adults were worried that young people were indifferent to real-world issues and narrow-minded about personal happiness. However, the protests by the MZ generation showed a protest culture that was on a whole other level. It would be difficult for the older generation to imagine such protests.

Fortunately, the court is rationally and step by step ending this situation according to the schedule. If civil war continues for a hundred years like in Rome, it will be difficult for new consciousness to emerge through learning through comparison.

The impeachment trial will be announced in the first half of this year, and the presidential election will follow. The contrast between Yoon Seok-yeol and Lee Jae-myung, the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea, the tone of the two different protests, the dynamics of vested interests and the people that run through history, etc. can be clearly compared in a short period of time, which can lead to an expansion of consciousness. It is also the ability of the people to proactively choose history by interpreting important events positively rather than negatively. I predict that Koreans equipped with a new consciousness will now set the barometer of history in the transition from K-culture to K-philosophy.
