의왕시 주민자치위원협의회(회장 양홍건)가 전개하고 있는 위례~과천선 ‘의왕역 연장’ 추진을 위한 범시민 서명운동에 현재까지 약 3만7,000여명의 시민이 동참했다.

의왕시 주민자치위원협의회는 위례~과천선 의왕역 연장계획이 올해 ‘제5차 국가철도망 구축계획’에 반영될 수 있도록 하기 위해 지난 2월 10일부터 시민들을 대상으로 서명운동을 전개했다.

특히 지난 2월 22일에는 고천체육공원에서 열린 ‘두발로데이’ 행사에 6개 동 주민자치위원들이 모여 참가자들을 대상으로 홍보 캠페인 및 서명운동을 펼치며 적극적인 참여를 독려했다.

위례~과천선을 의왕역까지 연장하는 방안은 남과 북으로 단절된 의왕시의 생활권을 연결하고, 의왕시의 광역 교통인프라 구축을 위해 꼭 필요한 노선으로, 의왕시민들의 많은 관심을 받고 있다.

위례~과천선 의왕 연장안은 지난해 4월 ‘경기도 철도기본계획’에 반영된 바 있으며, 현재 정부에서 추진 중인 의왕군포안산 3기 신도시 조성 사업과 지난해 11월에 의왕 오전왕곡 공공주택지구 사업계획이 발표되면서 그 필요성이 더욱 높아지고 있다.
