나라가 양분된 느낌이다. 군인들이 국회의사당 창문을 깨고 들어가는 장면을 텔레비전을 통해 실시간으로 보았는데도 그렇다. 해석이 다르기 때문이다. 팩트(fact, 事實)는 하나인데 인지(認知) 오류가 어디에선가 일어났다. 아니 인지 오류를 의도적으로 만들어내고 있다. 정치적 전략이 진실에 기반하기를 바라는 것은 순진한 것인가?

인간이 만들어낸 최대의 인위적 문명물이 정치란 생각을 하게 된다. 크게는 신정(神政), 왕정, 공화정 등 정치 시스템에 따라 팩트가 달라졌었다. 정치 밑에는 경제적 이득에 대한 치열한 싸움이 깔려있다. 히틀러가 선거를 통해 권력을 쥘 수 있었던 것도 그렇다. 임진왜란도 일본의 정치지형이 바뀌면서 기존 권력과의 갈등을 해결하기 위한 정치적 목적도 있었다. 정치는 장님이 코끼리를 설명하는 것과 같다. 부분적으로는 맞는 말들이다, 진영 논리는 그렇게 해서 나온다. 결국 말이 팩트에 옷을 입히고 팩트인 척한다. 임진왜란도 혼탁한 정치를 잘 보여준다. 정직한 정치는 가능한 것일까?

코끼리 모습이 정반대로 나온 임진왜란

임진왜란을 읽으며 통한했던 역사가 생각난다. 선조는 도요토미가 보낸 편지에서 분명한 침략 의도를 읽는다. 그는 실상을 알기 위해 동인의 김성일과 서인의 황윤길을 일본에 보낸다. 그런데, 이럴 수가! 두 사람의 의견은 정반대였다. 동인인 김성일은 일본은 천하태평이라고, 서인인 황윤길은 전쟁 준비를 하고 있다고. 두 사람 모두 실상을 알고 있었지만, 진영 논리가 이런 사태를 일으킨 것이다! 정부는 김성일의 보고를 팩트로 결정하고 전쟁 준비를 제대로 하지 않는다. 팩트는 말로 이렇게 달라진다. 이게 정치다.

이순신 장군이 없었다면 그때 조선은 사라졌을 것이다. 전쟁에서 쉽게 이긴 것도 아니다. 단 한 번도 패배한 적이 없는 이순신 장군은 암군인 선조와 무능한 원균, 서인의 모함으로 파직당해 고문으로 죽을 뻔하다가 다시 복직된다. 엉망진창이 된 해군을 추스려 싸워 이기지만 노량해전에서 이순신 장군은 전사한다. 선정을 베풀어 백성이 따르고 국가를 살려냈지만, 바로 그 이유로 정치는 그를 죽일 확률이 컸다. 살아서 국론을 분분하게 하는 것보다 죽음으로써 조국의 안녕을 원했을지 모른다. 그의 죽음은 그래서 자살이라는 주장도 있다.

진실은 시간이 흐른 후에야 드러날지 모른다. 이순신 장군 시대와 달리 빨라진 역사의 속도로 빨리 진실을 알아내지 못하면 미래가 엉뚱한 방향으로 나아갈 수 있다. 해외 엘리트들 중에는 한국이 세계의 중심이라고 말하는 사람들이 있다. 지구촌 시대에 지정학적으로도 그렇지만 연이어 일본의 GDP를 넘고, 외국 학자들 중 볼멘 듯 말하는 사람이 있는 것처럼 한류가 세계 문화의 척도가 되어가기 때문인 듯하다. 그래서 한국의 선택은 지구촌의 미래에 영향을 미친다. 한국의 현 정치 상황을 세계가 주시하는 이유이기도 하다.

한국이란 코끼리를 보려면

한국의 정치는 임진왜란이 일어나기 전 선조처럼 중요한 결정을 내려야 하는 기점에 서 있다. 둘로 나뉜 여론은 동인과 서인처럼 자신이 옳다는 명분을 내세워 국민에게 호소한다. 국민을 대신해서 사법기관이 솔로몬처럼 올바른 판단을 해야 한다. 재판관들이 코끼리를 만져서 코끼리의 본 모습을 추리해 내는 지혜를 갖기 바란다. 박근혜 대통령 탄핵 때도 양분된 여론으로 탄핵 재판 후 시위 도중 네 명의 사상자가 났다. 그래서 재판관만이 아니라 일반 국민도 솔로몬의 지혜를 가져야 한다.

언제 어디서나 정치가 현실을 만드는데, 이순신 장군 이야기에서 정치에 대해 많은 것을 배울 수 있다. 미국인 온리 콤판(Onrie Kompan)이란 만화가가 독학을 하고 한국을 6차례나 방문하며 이순신 장군을 6년 이상 연구한 후 그에 대한 만화를 그려낸 것도 그런 이유가 아닐까? 출판사도 배급사도 없이 이 만화가 미국에서 1위인 이유는 무엇일까? 이순신 장군의 삶에서 정치가 ‘현실’을 만드는 과정을 배울 수 있기 때문일 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 죽도록 어려운 상황에서도 진실하게 사는 훌륭한 모습에 감동했기 때문이 아닐까. 이순신을 모함한 당사자들은 이순신 장군의 이런 모습을 알고 있었다. 바로 그 때문에 이순신을 위험한 사람으로 만들었다. 진실을 왜곡한 것이다. 현재 한국의 상황도 이와 참 유사하다.

정치적 수사(修辭)에서 진실을 가려낼 수 있는 역량을 어떻게 키울 수 있을까? 그 답을 깨어있는 정신이라고 한 정치가가 있다. 정신이 잠들지 않으려면 정치 밑에서 작동하는 경제적 이득에 대한 욕망을 알아차려야 한다. 기득권이 사회적 의미와 가치의 문제를 다루고 해결하는 창조적 지능을 갖지 않으면 왜란에 대한 대비를 회피한 동인처럼 될 수 있다. 올바른 판단을 할 수 없도록 인지 오류를 일으켜 한국이란 코끼리 모습을 왜곡시키기 때문이다. 내가 접하는 언론이 진실을 다루는지 아닌지 스스로 감시해야 할 이유다.

The Imjin War also had a political purpose to resolve conflicts with the existing powers as the political landscape of Japan changed. Politics is like a blind man explaining an elephant. Partially true, that's how the logic of the camps comes about. In the end, words dress up facts and pretend to be facts. The Imjin War also shows the murky politics well. Is honest politics possible?

The Imjin War, where the elephant's appearance was completely reversed

Reading the Imjin War reminds me of the history that was painful. King Seonjo reads the clear intention of invasion in the letter sent by Toyotomi. He sends Kim Seong-il of the Dongin and Hwang Yun-gil of the Seoin to Japan to find out the truth. But, this can't be happening! The opinions of the two were completely opposite. Kim Seong-il of the Dongin said that Japan was at peace, and Hwang Yun-gil of the Seoin said that they were preparing for war. Both of them knew the truth, but the logic of the camps caused this situation! The government decides that Kim Seong-il's report is a fact and does not properly prepare for war. Facts change like this with words. This is politics.

If General Yi Sun-sin had not existed, Joseon would have disappeared at that time. It was not easy to win the war. I hope that the judges will have the wisdom to touch the elephant and infer its true nature. During the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, four people were killed during the protests after the impeachment trial due to divided public opinion. Therefore, not only the judges but also the general public must have the wisdom of Solomon.

Politics creates reality anytime and anywhere, and we can learn a lot about politics from the story of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Isn’t that why the American cartoonist Onrie Kompan studied Admiral Yi Sun-sin for more than six years after studying him on his own and visiting Korea six times? Why is this cartoon number one in the United States without a publisher or distributor? Perhaps it is because we can learn from the life of Admiral Yi Sun-sin how politics creates ‘reality’. Nevertheless, perhaps it is because we were moved by his admirable example of living truthfully even in difficult situations that could kill us. Those who framed Yi Sun-sin knew this aspect of him. That is why they made Yi Sun-sin a dangerous person. They distorted the truth. The current situation in Korea is very similar to this. How can we develop the ability to discern the truth from political rhetoric? There is a politician who said that the answer is an awakened mind. In order for the mind not to fall asleep, we must recognize the desire for economic gain that operates under politics. If the vested interests do not have the creative intelligence to deal with and solve the problems of social meaning and value, they may end up like the people who avoided preparing for the Imjin War. This is because they cause cognitive errors that prevent them from making the right judgments, distorting the image of the elephant that is Korea. This is why I have to monitor myself to see whether the media I am exposed to covers the truth or not.
