(Science-based Green Transition for All)’을 주제로 지속가능한 지역사회를 만들기 위한 해법이 논의됐다.

‘Local Government Climate Summit’ held for two days at KINTEX in Goyang Gyeonggi Province and ICLEI co-hosted, 82 local governments from 29 countries, international organizations, etc., 1,600 participants
The ‘Local Government Climate Summit’ opened on April 15 and was held for two days until the 16th at KINTEX in Goyang.
This opportunity summit, jointly hosted by Gyeonggi Province and ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), was attended by 1,600 local government officials from 82 cities in 29 countries, international organizations, climate and energy experts, etc.
The Local Government Climate Summit is the first large-scale international conference hosted by Gyeonggi Province since attracting the ICLEI Korea office to KINTEX, and was held with the aim of initiating a full-scale response to the climate crisis at the local government level and strengthening the foundation for cooperation with the international community.
This summit discussed solutions to create sustainable communities under the theme of ‘Science-based Green Transition for All.’ The general meeting began with the opening ceremony on the 15th, followed by a keynote speech, plenary session, six concurrent sessions, and a RE100 city network performance. On the 16th, six concurrent sessions, a closing ceremony, a joint declaration of local governments around the world, and a visit to the Janghang Wetland were held.
The opening ceremony began with an opening speech by Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, ICLEI President, followed by a welcoming speech by Gyeonggi Province 1st Vice Governor Kim Seong-jung, a congratulatory speech by Gyeonggi Province Assemblyman Oh Jun-hwan, and a video congratulatory speech by former US Vice President Al Gore.
In her keynote speech, Seyni NAFO, Chairwoman of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), emphasized the role of sustainable local cities linked to climate finance.
The RE100 city network performance, which featured Gyeonggi Province, Gwangmyeong City, Paju City, and representatives of international organizations, strongly demonstrated the will of local governments to transition to renewable energy.
During the general assembly, five core topics were discussed in each session: △Science-based solutions, △Promotion of citizen participation, △Climate economy, △Climate gap resolution, and △Harmony with nature. Each session was chaired by local government heads from Korea and abroad, including Nainaben Peddadiya (Mayor of Rajkot, India), Alex Desulme (Mayor of North Miami, Florida, USA), and Anna Reynolds (Mayor of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia), who presented local governments’ environmental policies and climate action activities.
On the last day of the general assembly, the 16th, the ‘World Local Government Joint Declaration’ based on the five core topics was adopted. Through the declaration, the general assembly participants pledged to take practical action and lead the way for a sustainable future with local governments at the center.
This declaration will be used to convey the voices of local governments to the international community at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in Brazil in November. Gyeonggi Province Climate, Environment, and Energy Bureau Director Cha Seong-su introduced Gyeonggi Province’s leading climate policies, including ‘Gyeonggi RE100,’ ‘Climate Platform,’ and ‘Climate Insurance,’ and said, “Gyeonggi Province’s policies are climate crisis response models closely related to daily life based on scientific data.”
Gyeonggi Province expects that this general meeting will be an opportunity to reexamine the role of local governments in responding to the climate crisis and expand the global cooperation network by sharing the achievements and policies of each country.
