[Desk Column] After reading Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, “My Story of Experimenting with Truth”
“What is the difference between honesty and frankness?”
Mahatma Gandhi was a racist. After reading Gandhi’s autobiography, “My Story of Experimenting with Truth,” I looked up information and found out something I didn’t know. Mahatma Gandhi, whom I respected so much, was a racist? I was disappointed.
There are many books that have influenced the reporter’s life, but if I had to pick three, the first would be “Baekbeom Ilji,” which my neighborhood older brother gave me when I was in middle school. After reading that book, I became a nationalist.
The second book was “The Autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi, the Great Soul,” which I read when I was in my first year of high school. The abstract title of the book, published by Samsung Cultural Library at the time, was “In Search of Truth.” In that book, Gandhi said, “If one person can do it, everyone can do it.”
When Gandhi’s third child got sick, the doctor told him to feed him eggs, but how anxious must he have been that the child would die if he didn’t feed him eggs? Fortunately, the child was cured by Gandhi’s folk remedies of mud therapy and water therapy.
That’s all I remember. After reading Gandhi’s autobiography, the reporter became like Napoleon, who said, “There is no such thing as impossible in my dictionary.” “If someone else did it, I can do it too.”
After reading “In Search of Truth,” the reporter became a humanist.
The third book, Goethe’s “Faust,” is the only book I’ve read six times in my life. After reading Faust, the reporter was able to establish a life outlook that has remained the same to this day.
Reading Gandhi’s entire autobiography was a burden that the reporter had to read someday. Although I already had the book translated by Ham Seok-heon and published by Hangilsa, I couldn’t bring myself to read it because of its considerable thickness.
A friend who I have been reading with since last year suggested reading Gandhi’s autobiography, so I decided to read it this time and finally finished it.
While reading Gandhi’s autobiography, “My Story of Experimenting with Truth,” the reporter had two questions.
First, what made Gandhi a “great soul”?
Second, what is the difference between honesty and sincerity?
To be honest, I never thought about the difference between honesty and sincerity until I read Gandhi's autobiography.
The answer I came up with after thinking about it is that honesty is answering honestly when someone asks you something, or honestly confessing to the person you did something wrong when you did something wrong.
So what is honesty? It is speaking confidently and honestly even when no one asks you or the person you did something wrong to doesn't exist. For example, it's like a confession of love. Honesty is saying confidently, "I love someone." Isn't it wrong to love someone?
Don't many people like this kind of "honest confession"?
So how did Gandhi become great?
Everyone may have different thoughts, but I think there are only three great people in the 20th century.
In order of birth date, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King. The commonality between these three people, in my opinion, is their belief in humanity, their inclusiveness that embraces even their enemies, and their achievement of their goals.
There are many great people. In South Korea, there are Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, former President Roh Moo-hyun, former President Kim Dae-jung, and former Red Cross President Seo Young-hoon; in China, there are Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, etc.
If I were to ask who is the greatest human being among the three great human beings of the 20th century, I would say Nelson Mandela. Why? Because among the three, Gandhi was an independence activist, Martin Luther King was a religious person, and Mandela was the only politician among the three.
Can’t we see this if we look at Korean society?
The politicians of Korean society who try to kill their enemies by any means necessary are the epitome of this. They make things that don’t exist seem real and things that they didn’t do seem real, so they can’t kill everyone, but they try to kill their enemies. Politician Mandela did not retaliate against his enemies who had sent him to prison for 27 years after becoming president, but forgave them all with the famous words, “Forgive but do not forget.”
Gandhi was an independence activist, and King was a religious pastor, so they could forgive and embrace everyone, but isn’t this an impossible course of action for a politician?
Then, isn’t former President Kim Dae-jung, who pardoned and reinstated Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, who had tried to kill him, also great? Of course, he has great aspects. Nevertheless, what I think was lacking was his excessive desire for power. For example, if he had yielded the presidential candidacy to former President Kim Young-sam in 1987 and helped him win, wouldn’t Korean society have been much better than it is now?
Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India, to a Hindu family. His mother was a devout Hindu, fasting often and devoting herself to her religious life. Gandhi became a Hindu under the influence of his mother, and his tolerance and understanding of various religions, including Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam, were formed from an early age.
Gandhi was introverted and quiet as a child, and did not have many friends. He was a quiet and shy child. However, he had a strong sense of truthfulness and moral sensitivity, and received early education in honesty and morality. When he was young, his father emphasized honesty and responsibility. Due to this influence, he practiced honestly confessing his mistakes from an early age. Although his academic performance was not outstanding, he was diligent and disciplined. He was particularly interested in moral education and Sanskrit.
He married Kasturbai Gandhi at the age of 13, and while experiencing domestic responsibilities at a young age, he also indulged in lust.
He went to England in 1888 to study law and become a lawyer. Gandhi became known throughout India because he worked as a lawyer in British South Africa from 1893 to 1914, fighting against racial discrimination and carrying out a non-violent resistance movement for Indian immigrants in South Africa.
After returning to his homeland in 1915, he temporarily went back to South Africa to work, but until 1947, he devoted himself to India's independence by carrying out a 'non-violent and disobedience movement' against the colonial power, Britain. He led the salt march that spread like wildfire throughout India in 1930, and led peaceful resistance such as the boycott of British products. He also worked to resolve conflicts between religions, emphasizing harmony between Hindus and Muslims.
In 1947, India gained independence from Britain, but Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by an extreme Hindu nationalist in 1948.
The means of resistance that Gandhi chose to achieve independence from Britain were non-violence (Ahimsa), Satyagraha, disobedience, and the boycott of British products.
Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘non-harm’ or ‘compassion’. It is a principle of non-killing that is universally emphasized in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, etc. It is a pacifist principle that goes beyond simply prohibiting killing and opposes all violence while emphasizing sympathy and compassion instead of anger and hatred.
Satyagraha is a compound word of ‘Satya’, which means truth or essence in Sanskrit, and ‘agraha’, which means grasping, effort, and passion. It is a non-violent resistance movement that effectively appeals to conscience to fight injustice and hostility, started by Mahatma Gandhi. ‘Satyagraha’ is interpreted as ‘thoroughly maintaining the truth’ or ‘effort to find the truth’.
Gandhi insisted that Indians continue the non-violent resistance movement, saying that because they possess the truth, they are “superior to the British who do not possess the truth”. Westerners felt ‘awe’ for the Indians who stood up to the merciless violence of the British and asserted their claims non-violently to the end, and this awe became the driving force behind India’s independence.
What made Gandhi a ‘great soul’ was his honesty, firm belief in the truth, and strong practical ability. Mahatma Gandhi, the great soul, wrote his autobiography ‘My Experiment with Truth’ honestly without anyone asking. He ‘honestly’ wrote about not only his ‘mistakes’ and failures in his life, but also his success stories and failures in the process of the Indian independence movement.
Gandhi’s autobiography ‘My Experiment with Truth’ is a must-read for anyone who wants to live an honest and upright life.
Finally, I ask everyone, including myself. Are you an honest person? Are you an honest person? Or are you neither here nor there?
