강의할 때 가장 많이 교재로 삼는 영화가 필자의 경우 ‘바그다드 카페’다. 옹달샘처럼 내 영혼을 적셔주는 영화이기 때문이다. 그렇다고 신비적이고 초월적인 어려운 영화는 결코 아니다. 오히려 일상이 영적인 삶을 살아가는 바탕이라는 것을 깨닫게 해준다.

이 영화에는 중년의 두 여성이 주인공으로 등장한다. 쟈스민은 아주 뚱뚱한 백인 여자로 독일에서 남편과 미국 여행을 왔다가 남편과 싸우고 남편을 떠난다. 그녀는 사막 한가운데 난 길을 걸어서 카페와 모텔을 함께 운영하는 허름한 ‘바그다드 카페’에 머문다. 이곳 주인인 브렌다는 날씬한 흑인여자로 피아노를 치고 싶어 하는 갓난 손주가 딸린 미혼 부(父)인 청소년 아들 살라모와 노는 걸 좋아하는 중학생 정도의 딸이 있다. 브렌다의 남편은 부부싸움을 하다 홧김에 집을 나가버렸다. 남편과 헤어진 두 여인은 서로 의지하면서 이곳에 장기 투숙을 하는 사람들과 가족처럼 지내게 된다. 전에는 스스로를 손님으로만 여기던 이곳 사람들이 쟈스민이 등장하며 점차 소셜 페밀리(Social Family)처럼 유사가족이 되었기 때문이다.

이들 중에 영화 간판을 그리던 콕스는 살라모가 치는 피아노 음악에 깊이 빠져 감상하는 쟈스민을 보고 영감을 받아 그녀를 그리기 시작한다. 외모로는 그녀를 아름답다고 할 수 없다. 그러나 누구나 자신을 잃어버릴 정도로 몰입하면 다 아름다워진다. 시공간에 묶여있는 자아를 벗어나기 때문이다. 불교는 명상을 통해, 기독교는 기도를 통해 자신을 벗어나는 경험을 한다. 건강법으로 활용하는 현대의 요가와 달리 진짜 요가는 8단계로 세밀하게 나뉜 8종류의 요가 수행법을 통해 몰아(沒我)의 경지로 나아가 자신을 벗어나도록 돕는다.

이 영화의 제1 주인공은 쟈스민이다. 그녀는 사람들을 자기 기대라는 색안경을 끼지 않고 있는 그대로 바라보면서 조금씩 가까이 다가간다. 쎙떽쥐베리의 짧은 소설 ‘어린 왕자’에서 여우는 “길들인다”는 말로 서로가 특별한 존재가 되어가는 것을 설명한다. 이 영화는 일상의 삶 속에서 유대감을 형성하는 과정을 통해 내적 연대가 꽃피우는 과정을 잘 보여준다. 쟈스민과 브렌다, 콕스와 쟈스민, 쟈스민과 모텔에 사는 사람들, 고속도로를 운전하는 기사들이 서로 길들여지면서 서로가 특별한 존재로 되어간다. 물리적으로 모여 있던 사람들이 진정한 관심을 가지게 되면서 내적으로 연결되며 관계가 깊어진다. 이 영화의 마지막 장면은 콕스가 쟈스민에게 청혼을 하고, 쟈스민은 브렌다에게 물어보겠다고 한다. 실제로 쟈스민은 브렌다에게 묻지 않고 뜸을 들인 다음 곧 ‘Yes’라고 답한다. 브렌다와의 관계에 대한 책임을 보여주는 쟈스민의 이 제스처는 가장 깊은 감동을 느낀 장면이었다.

일반적으로 영화는 인간이 살아가는 일상의 이야기를 통해 전개된다. 그러나 훌륭한 영화일수록 일상의 장면에서도 우주적 차원이 느껴지게 연출한다. 단순히 이야기의 전개에 그치지 않고 생명의 신비, 의식을 가진 인간의 내면, 의식을 넘어선 혼적 존재로서의 인간, 가장 상위에 있는 영적인 인간에 대한 인식까지 드러내려고 노력한다. 영화 ‘바그다드 카페’를 첫 번째로 다루는 것도, 보통의 인간이 사는 일상을 통해 내면의 섬세함, 혼적이고, 영적인 존재로서의 인간을 신비화하지 않고 보여주기 때문이다.

The film features two middle-aged women as its main characters. Jasmine, a very overweight white woman, travels to the United States from Germany with her husband, but after a fight with him, she leaves him. She walks down a desert road and finds herself at the shabby "Baghdad Cafe," a cafe and motel. The owner, Brenda, is a slender black woman with a teenage son, Salamo, a single father with a newborn grandchild who longs to play the piano, and a playful, middle-school-aged daughter. Brenda's husband, in a fit of anger, leaves the house after a marital dispute. Two women, separated from their husbands, rely on each other and become like family to the long-term residents of this place. The residents, who previously viewed themselves as mere guests, gradually become a kind of social family with Jasmine's arrival.

Among them, Cox, who was drawing movie signs, was inspired by Jasmine's deep absorption in Salamo's piano music and began to draw her. She may not be physically beautiful, but anyone who loses themselves in the act becomes beautiful. This is because they transcend the ego bound to time and space. Movies typically unfold through the everyday lives of humans. However, the best films often manage to evoke a cosmic dimension even within these everyday scenes. Beyond simply unfolding the story, they strive to reveal the mystery of life, the conscious inner self of the human being, the human being as a soulful being beyond consciousness, and the awareness of the highest spiritual being. The reason "Baghdad Cafe" is the first film to be featured is because it portrays the inner delicacy, the soulful, and spiritual being of humanity through the everyday lives of ordinary people, without mystifying it.
