도시화로 훼손됐던 도심 속 습지가 민관의 유기적인 협력을 통해 생태계의 보고로 되살아난 데 이어, 미래 세대를 위한 살아있는 자연 배움터로 거듭나고 있다.

의왕시는 현대로템(주)과 함께 민관협력 환경·사회·투명(ESG) 자연환경 복원 사업의 일환으로 기획한 「2026년 포일습지 생태교육」의 1차 교육 과정을 성공적으로 마무리했다고 17일 밝혔다.

이번 교육은 포일습지 생태복원 사업을 통해 새롭게 단장된 복원 습지를 교육 현장으로 직접 활용했다. 학생들이 우리 고장의 소중한 생태 자원을 몸소 체험하고, 지구 온난화와 환경 파괴 속에서 생물다양성이 갖는 가치를 올바르게 이해할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 마련됐다.

의왕시는 앞서 지난해 7월 현대로템(주), 한국환경보전원과 ‘자연환경 복원 및 생물다양성 증진을 위한 업무협약’을 체결하고, 도심 개발로 인해 제 기능을 잃어가던 포일습지의 수생태계를 복원하는 한편, 멸종위기 야생생물 2급인 맹꽁이의 서식 환경을 개선하는 등 지속 가능한 생태 기반을 다져왔다.

이후 시는 환경부의 생태계보전부담금 반환 사업과 기업의 ESG 경영 자금을 유기적으로 연계해 지난해 12월 포일습지 복원 공사를 전격 완료했으며, 올해부터 복원된 습지를 매개로 한 단계별 생태 교육 프로그램을 가동 중이다.

이달 중 총 4회에 걸쳐 진행된 이번 1차 교육은 관내 포일초등학교 5학년 4개 학급, 총 70명의 학생을 대상으로 진행됐다. 통제된 교실에서 벗어난 학생들은 포일습지 구석구석을 누비며 가라앉은 습지가 어떻게 수질을 정화하고 홍수를 조절하는지, 멸종위기종을 왜 보호해야 하는지 등을 직접 눈으로 확인하는 깊이 있는 탐구 활동에 참여했다.

특히 이번 교육에는 민관협력 ESG 사업을 통해 체계적으로 양성된 전문 ‘의왕 에코학교 강사진’이 대거 투입됐다. 강사들은 아이들의 눈높이에 맞춘 다정한 설명과 현장 중심의 관찰 프로그램을 이끌며 학생들의 흥미와 집중도를 한층 끌어올렸다.

교육에 참여한 한 초등학생은 “매일 지나다니던 동네 습지에 맹꽁이를 비롯해 이렇게 다양한 곤충과 식물들이 살고 있는지 몰라서 정말 신기했다”라며 “앞으로 포일습지를 더 아끼고 쓰레기도 줍는 다정한 지킴이가 되겠다”고 야무진 포부를 밝혔다. 인솔 교사들 역시 “아이들이 가까운 곳에서 대자연을 관찰할 수 있는 훌륭한 프로그램이었으며, 강사진의 전문적인 해설 덕분에 교육적 효과가 매우 높았다”며 큰 만족감을 표했다.

Urban wetlands, damaged by urbanization, have been restored into a treasure trove of ecosystems through organic public-private cooperation and are now being reborn as a living nature learning center for future generations.

Uiwang City announced on the 17th that it has successfully completed the first session of the "2026 Poil Wetland Ecological Education," a program planned as part of a public-private partnership ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) natural environment restoration project in collaboration with Hyundai Rotem.

This education program utilized the restored wetland, newly refurbished through the Poil Wetland Ecological Restoration Project, as the actual educational site. It was designed to help students personally experience the precious ecological resources of their region and correctly understand the value of biodiversity amidst global warming and environmental destruction.

The student added, "From now on, I will become a friendly guardian who cherishes the Poil Wetland and picks up trash."
