글은 멀리 있는 예술이 아니라 자신의 삶을 다시 들여다보는 일이다. 의왕시 중앙도서관이 시민들이 독자를 넘어 창작자로 성장할 수 있는 문학 프로그램을 마련했다.

의왕시는 한국문화예술위원회의 ‘2026 문학상주작가 지원사업’에 선정돼 오는 11월까지 다양한 문학 프로그램을 운영한다고 밝혔다. 이번 사업은 중앙도서관에 상주하는 소설가 임택수 작가와 함께 시민들이 읽고, 쓰고, 이야기하는 시간을 만들어가는 데 초점을 맞췄다.

프로그램은 단순한 글쓰기 강좌에 머물지 않는다. 창작을 꿈꾸는 시민을 위한 단편소설 창작 워크숍부터 공모전 출품을 목표로 하는 연구반, 지역의 기억을 기록하는 프로젝트, 북토크와 독서 모임까지 문학을 다양한 방식으로 경험할 수 있도록 구성됐다.

특히 눈길을 끄는 프로그램은 ‘의왕인의 추억 아카이빙’이다. 의왕 10경을 함께 걸으며 풍경과 기억을 기록하고, 시민들의 이야기를 모아 한 권의 책으로 엮어내는 참여형 프로젝트다.

지역의 장소와 개인의 추억이 만나 또 하나의 ‘의왕 이야기’를 만들어 가는 셈이다.

도서관 독서동아리 ‘북꾸다’와 함께하는 북큐레이션과 지역서점 북토크도 이어진다. 책을 읽는 즐거움에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 작가와 독자가 만나 생각을 나누고, 문학을 일상 속 문화로 확장하는 시간이다.

9월 문학주간에는 더욱 특별한 프로그램도 준비된다. ‘상주작가와 함께하는 프랑스 여행’, ‘일하면서 글쓰기’, ‘한 권의 장편소설 안에서 오래 머무는 시간’ 등 여행과 삶, 예술과 창작을 연결하는 다채로운 강좌가 시민들을 기다린다.

김성제 의왕시장은 “문학상주작가 지원사업은 시민이 문학의 향유자를 넘어 창작의 주체로 성장할 수 있는 소중한 기회”라며 “지역의 이야기를 함께 기록하고 문학의 즐거움을 나누는 이번 프로그램에 많은 시민들이 함께하길 바란다”고 말했다.

이번 사업은 문학을 특별한 사람들의 전유물이 아닌, 누구나 자신의 삶을 한 편의 이야기로 써 내려갈 수 있는 문화로 확장하려는 시도다. 올가을 의왕 중앙도서관은 책을 읽는 공간을 넘어 시민들의 이야기가 태어나는 작은 문학 작업실이 될 전망이다.

Operating the Literature Resident Writer Program Until November: A Project Connecting Citizens' Lives and Memories

Writing is not a distant art form, but rather an act of looking back into one's own life. Uiwang Central Library has prepared a literature program designed to help citizens grow from readers into creators.

Uiwang City announced that it has been selected for the Arts Council Korea’s "2026 Literature Resident Writer Support Project" and will operate various literature programs until this coming November. This project focuses on creating opportunities for citizens to read, write, and talk together with novelist Lim Taek-su, who resides at the Central Library.

The programs go beyond simple writing classes. They are structured to allow citizens to experience literature in diverse ways, ranging from short story writing workshops for aspiring writers to research groups aiming for competition entries, projects documenting local memories, and book talks and reading clubs.

A program that particularly catches the eye is "Archiving the Memories of Uiwang Residents." This is a participatory project that involves walking together through the 10 scenic spots of Uiwang to record landscapes and memories, and gathering citizens' stories to weave them into a single book.

In essence, local places and personal memories meet to create another "Story of Uiwang."

Book curation in collaboration with the library reading club "Bookkkuda" and book talks at local bookstores will also take place. Going a step beyond the joy of reading, this is a time for authors and readers to meet and share thoughts, expanding literature into a culture integrated into daily life.

Even more special programs are prepared for Literature Week in September. A variety of courses connecting travel and life, and art and creation—such as "A Trip to France with a Resident Writer," "Writing While Working," and "Time to Linger Inside a Full-Length Novel"—await citizens. Uiwang Mayor Kim Seong-je stated, “The Literary Resident Writer Support Program is a valuable opportunity for citizens to grow from mere consumers of literature into active creators,” adding, “I hope many citizens will join this program to record local stories together and share the joy of literature.”

This project is an attempt to expand literature from being the exclusive property of a select few into a culture where anyone can write their own life story. This autumn, Uiwang Central Library is expected to transform from a space for reading into a small literary workshop where citizens’ stories are born.
