Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment: "99.1% of Summer Agricultural Products Safe"
111 Inspections Including Leafy Vegetables; Sales Suspended for One Perilla Leaf Case Exceeding Pesticide Residue Standards
The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment conducted safety inspections on leafy vegetables, which see increased consumption during the summer, and agricultural products with frequent instances of pesticide residue non-compliance. The results showed that 99.1% of the inspected items met the standards.
The institute announced that from June 1 to July 5, it collected 111 samples of 21 agricultural products being sold at large supermarkets, general stores, local food outlets, and wholesale markets within the province and conducted safety inspections for pesticide residues.
The inspections targeted lettuce, perilla leaves, cucumbers, Napa cabbage, and chili peppers, which are in high demand during the vacation season, as well as Swiss chard, chives, young radish, and chicory, which have a relatively high number of cases of pesticide residue non-compliance. As a result of the inspection, 110 out of a total of 111 cases (99.1%) were confirmed to meet the permissible standards for pesticide residues.
However, one case of perilla leaves was deemed non-compliant after chlorothalonil, a fungicide component, was detected at levels exceeding the standard. The research institute immediately suspended sales of the product in question and notified relevant agencies to ensure follow-up measures, such as blocking distribution, were taken.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment is proactively blocking the distribution of non-compliant agricultural products by conducting regular safety inspections, focusing on agricultural products with increased seasonal consumption and items at risk of pesticide residue non-compliance.
Do Young-sook, Head of the Agricultural and Fisheries Products Inspection Department at the Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "We will continue to monitor pesticide residues to create a safe distribution environment for agricultural products and further strengthen safety management so that residents can purchase produce with peace of mind."
