Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Concludes Psychological and Emotional Training for Teachers on Arts Education to Care for Students' Minds

250 Participants Strengthen Capacity to Support Student Mental Health Using Art and Music

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has concluded teacher training aimed at integrating students' psychological and emotional recovery with school arts education. It is expected that the mental health support system in schools will be further strengthened as teachers cultivate teaching capabilities to understand students' emotional states and aid in healing through the use of art and music.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced that it conducted a job training program for leading teachers on arts psychology and emotion based on 'RAS Gyeonggi Arts Education' for elementary and secondary school teachers at Hanyang University's ERICA Campus from the 8th to the 30th.

This training was organized to respond to the educational environment where the demand for psychological and emotional support for students is growing, and to disseminate teaching models to schools that help with self-expression and emotional recovery through artistic activities. Following last year, 250 teachers participated this year, and the program was divided into basic and advanced courses.

The Provincial Office of Education organized a basic course in collaboration with the Teacher Training Council for the Revitalization of School Arts Education, while Gachon University and the Art Therapy Society participated in developing an advanced course to operate a specialized curriculum centered on art and music.

The training placed greater emphasis on hands-on experience and practice than on lectures. The basic course covered topics such as understanding the Emotional Behavioral Drawing Test (EBDT), preventing teacher burnout, art activities for inner exploration, social-emotional education and the application of music, music classes focused on self-expression, and healing performances. The advanced course continued with field-application-oriented education, including art therapy techniques, the use of projective tests, music therapy, and music programs designed to enhance emotional regulation and community competence.

Recently, the importance of psychological and emotional support in schools has been growing due to academic stress and interpersonal issues. Accordingly, educational approaches in which teachers naturally observe students' emotions and elicit expression through artistic activities are gaining attention as a new alternative.

Oh Jin-young, a teacher at Bucheon Girls' Middle School who participated in the training, said, "It was a meaningful time as I was able to directly experience the healing effects of artistic activities and learn various examples that can be applied to school classes." The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to further strengthen the support system for students' mental health by continuously discovering and sharing examples of psychological and emotional classes linked to arts subjects, and by expanding the training of specialized teachers to be in charge of 'RAS Gyeonggi Arts Education'.
