“50 Years in the Sky” Re-unfolds in Gwacheon: Commemorative Performance for National Intangible Cultural Heritage Tightrope Walking
‘Daeryeong Gwangdae’ Performance at Gwacheon Central Park on the 6th, Featuring Holder Kim Dae-gyun and Young Tightrope Performers
A special tightrope walking performance commemorating the 50th anniversary of the designation of Tightrope Walking as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage will take place in Gwacheon.
Gwacheon City will host the “2026 Tightrope Walking Transmission Planning Performance – A Feast of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Daeryeong Gwangdae” at 3 p.m. on the 6th at the lawn plaza of Gwacheon Central Park.
Prepared to mark 50 years since Tightrope Walking was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1976, this performance is an occasion to reflect on the value of traditional arts and shed light on the future transmission of the art in Gwacheon, considered the home of Tightrope Walking.
Taking the stage will be Kim Dae-gyun, the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Tightrope Walking Performing Arts, as well as young inheritors aspiring to become the next generation of tightrope performers. The performance combines female and male tightrope walkers with traditional dances, *Palbak Taryeong*, and *Gutgeori Dance* to showcase the acrobatic skills, witty banter, and humor of tightrope walking.
In addition to the breathtaking acrobatics performed on the rope, various traditional arts such as *Pansori*, *Nongak*, and traditional vocal music enrich the show. Members of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Iri Nongak Preservation Society will make special appearances, while Wang Ki-seok, the holder of the Jeonbuk Intangible Cultural Heritage *Sugungga*, and its trainees will present the *Pansori* stage. Lee Chun-mok, the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage *Seodo Sori*, and transmission educator Park Jun-gil will also participate.
In particular, this performance adds significance to the transmission of tradition by not only showcasing the original form of the tradition but also placing young tightrope walkers at the center of the stage. It serves as an opportunity to demonstrate to citizens that tightrope walking is not merely a tradition of the past but is being passed down to the next generation.
Gwacheon is also pursuing the construction of a Tightrope Walking Training Center to further strengthen the foundation for the transmission of tightrope walking. The education center is scheduled to be utilized as a space for tightrope walking education, performances, and transmission activities.
An official from Gwacheon City stated, “To mark the 50th anniversary of the designation of tightrope walking, we have prepared a stage featuring holders, successors, and young tightrope walkers,” adding, “We hope this will be a time for citizens to enjoy the charm of traditional tightrope walking and to feel its value and the significance of its transmission.”
This performance is sponsored by Gwacheon City, the National Heritage Administration, and the National Heritage Promotion Agency. <
