Gyeonggi Migrant Women’s Counseling Center Marks One Year with Over 6,000 Consultations: “Beyond Violence to Complex Crises”
712 Women Counseled, 6,101 Support Cases Handled; Domestic Violence Tops the List at 23.3%
The Gyeonggi Migrant Women’s Counseling Center has conducted over 6,000 consultations in its first year of operation. The cases revealed a mix of issues—ranging from gender-based violence (including domestic violence) to concerns regarding residency status, nationality, legal matters, child-rearing, and family relationships—underscoring the need for an integrated support system for migrant women who are victims of violence.
On the 1st, the center held a "First Anniversary Report Meeting" at the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, presenting data on consultations and support provided from August of last year through June of this year, as well as outlining future tasks.
According to the center, 712 migrant women received counseling during this period, totaling 6,101 consultation cases. This averages out to approximately nine sessions per person. Monthly consultation volume rose from 23 cases in the opening month to 893 cases by June of this year.
A total of 9,731 issues were identified during the counseling process (including overlapping cases). Domestic violence was the most frequent issue, accounting for 2,272 cases (23.3%). Complaints related to gender-based violence—including domestic violence, sexual violence, prostitution, stalking, and dating violence—made up 30.1% of the total.
Violence was not the only issue; problems involving children, residency status, nationality, legal matters, family relationships, and daily living difficulties appeared in complex combinations. This implies that migrant women who are victims of violence—and who simultaneously face challenges regarding residency status or language barriers—may find it even more difficult to access existing support systems. The center provides counseling regardless of residency status and facilitates access to services such as interpretation in ten languages, as well as legal, medical, and emergency assistance. It is also strengthening ties with community resources to address the complex issues identified during the counseling process.
A center official stated that they plan to further refine their counseling and support systems to ensure that no migrant women are excluded from assistance due to factors such as residency status or language barriers.
