Choo Mi-ae: “Semiconductor Competitiveness Hinges on Gigawatt-Scale Eco-Friendly Power Infrastructure”
Gyeonggi Province Sets 2030 Renewable Energy Target of 10GW; Bolsters Support for Semiconductor Firms to Meet RE100 Goals
Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae met with global semiconductor companies and declared, “I will establish Gyeonggi Province as a new global benchmark for the eco-friendly semiconductor industry, where cutting-edge technology and green energy grow together.”
On the 27th, Governor Choo hosted a “Policy Roundtable on Renewable Energy for Global Semiconductor Companies” in Seongnam. The event was attended by representatives from global firms—including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Apple, Amazon Web Services (AWS), ASML, Microsoft, and Qualcomm—as well as officials from SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International). Discussions focused on securing renewable energy and strategies to meet RE100 requirements.
Governor Choo emphasized, “While the race for semiconductor competitiveness begins at the nanometer scale, the ultimate outcome for the industry depends on the ability to supply gigawatt-scale, eco-friendly power infrastructure.” She added, “Securing power, achieving RE100 goals, and navigating permitting processes are the primary challenges companies face on the ground.”
Gyeonggi Province assesses that securing a stable supply of renewable energy is emerging as a critical factor determining investment and export competitiveness for semiconductor companies, particularly as demands for carbon neutrality across global supply chains intensify.
The province plans to expand its renewable energy supply base with a target of 10GW by 2030, utilizing industrial complexes, factory rooftops, agrivoltaic and floating solar installations, and idle land. It intends to pursue large-scale renewable energy projects and Energy Storage System (ESS) hubs, while also facilitating Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) by connecting companies’ energy needs with power generation providers. Key agenda items at the meeting included securing a stable supply of renewable energy to meet the massive power demands of semiconductor plants and data centers, alleviating the burden of procurement costs, and expanding agrivoltaic systems.
Participating companies called for the establishment of systems and infrastructure that would enable the timely procurement of necessary renewable energy, alongside the expansion of large-scale power grids. Gyeonggi Province plans to refine the specific demands and suggestions of each company, propose policy improvements to the central government and relevant agencies, and continue follow-up consultations.
Meanwhile, the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is projected to require approximately 15.5 GW of power by 2040. Gyeonggi Province aims to establish a stable power supply foundation for the semiconductor industry by expanding renewable energy while simultaneously fast-tracking the construction of power transmission and substation facilities and increasing Energy Storage System (ESS) capacity.
