Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education Launches ‘Phone-Free 100 Days’ Challenge: Putting Down Smartphones to Explore a Wider World
Students to Engage in Reading, Arts, and Sports Instead of Smartphones; Top 100 Participants to Earn Overseas Study Trip
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education is launching the "Phone-Free 100 Days Miracle" challenge, a 100-day initiative where students voluntarily manage their smartphone usage, starting September 1.
Rather than unilaterally restricting smartphone use, this digital detox project empowers student councils to set their own rules and encourages students to reflect on their usage habits. Students across the province will make a 100-day pledge, document their daily progress, and cultivate self-regulation skills.
During the time spent away from smartphones, students will gain new experiences through "RAS" activities—Reading, Arts, and Sports—and document their activities and personal growth in a portfolio. Teachers, parents, and the local community will also support the students in their efforts.
The Office of Education plans to evaluate the portfolios documenting the 100 days of practice and reflection, selecting 100 outstanding students to receive the opportunity for an overseas study trip during winter break.
Through this challenge, the Office of Education aims to go beyond merely reducing smartphone usage; it seeks to support students in developing self-directedness and global competencies by engaging in reading, arts, sports, and diverse socio-cultural experiences beyond the digital screen.
