Gyeonggi-do students promoted K-Culture in Mongolian schools

20 high school students visit Ulaanbaatar school for cultural exchange including Hanbok, K-POP, and traditional games

‘RAS character development education combining reading, art, and sports’ expanded into international exchange

High school students from Gyeonggi Province visited a local school in Mongolia and introduced Korean traditional and popular culture directly, promoting cultural exchange between Korean and Mongolian students.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education International Education Center announced that it ran the ‘K-Culture Student Promotional Ambassador Project’ in the area of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia for five days from the 6th to the 10th. 28 people, including 20 high school students and guidance teachers from the province, participated in this program.

Before leaving the country, the students learned Mongolian culture and language, interacted with local students online, and prepared a visit program. Afterwards, they visited Ulaanbaatar School No. 52 on the 7th and the National University of Education Affiliated School on the 8th and held a ‘K-Culture Festival’ that took advantage of the characteristics of each school.

The program used a variety of materials, from Korean history and traditional culture to Hangul, Hanbok, and K-POP. Cheonghak High School introduced the ‘Heavenly Train Field Map’, an astronomical chart from the Joseon Dynasty, and folk paintings, and Yongjuk High School provided an experience of making a miniature Hanok structure.

Shinwon High School presented a poetry reading on the theme of Hangul, and Poongsan High School prepared a performance combining Hanbok, Hangul, and K-POP dance. Namyang High School students continued their experience-based exchange by playing traditional games such as tombstone hitting and gonggi with Mongolian students.

Mongolian students also responded to the Korean students' program by showing off their country's traditional music and dance. Rather than simply introducing Korean culture, the event was held in a way that allowed students from both countries to experience each other's cultures.

This project is also meaningful in that it is an example of international exchange of ‘RAS character development education’ promoted by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education. RAS is an educational method that supports students’ holistic growth by linking reading, arts, and sports.

Kim Young-kwan, Director of the International Education Center of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, said, “It was a meaningful opportunity to promote our culture and interact with Mongolian students through content prepared by the students themselves.” He added, “Through international exchanges, we will support Gyeonggi-do students to grow into global democratic citizens.”
