Gyeonggi-do Hosts ‘Therapeutic Horseback Riding Event’ for People with Disabilities and Their Families

Expanding into a Socially Beneficial Activity Promoting Physical Activity, Emotional Stability, and Family Bonding

A therapeutic horseback riding event designed to foster physical activity and emotional stability through interaction with horses was held in Gyeonggi-do.

The ‘2026 Gyeonggi-do Therapeutic Horseback Riding Event,’ sponsored by Gyeonggi-do and organized by the Korea Therapeutic Riding Association, took place on the 12th at the Riding Horse Complex within the Gyeonggi-do Livestock Promotion Center in Hwaseong City. Approximately 150 people participated, including individuals with disabilities, their families, and representatives from social service organizations.

Marking its third year, the event was held under the theme "A Healing Path with Horses for Everyone," featuring a program that allowed families to experience therapeutic and rehabilitative horseback riding together.

After receiving safety training, participants engaged in a step-by-step process that began with familiarizing themselves with the horses—such as petting and feeding them—and progressed to walking alongside the horses and eventually mounting and riding them. This approach enabled even those with little prior riding experience to naturally bond with the horses through direct contact.

A variety of horse-themed activities followed, including demonstrations of farriery (horseshoeing), horseshoe tossing games, and making horse-shaped pizzas. Participants also toured the recreational ranch, pasture, and riding horse training center to observe how horses are raised, cared for, and trained.

Gyeonggi-do plans to expand therapeutic horseback riding beyond mere sports or leisure, positioning it instead as a socially beneficial activity that supports physical activity, emotional recovery, and family communication for people with disabilities. To this end, the province intends to continuously create opportunities for residents to easily interact and bond with horses. Lee Kang-young, Director of the Gyeonggi-do Livestock and Animal Welfare Bureau, said, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the value of therapeutic and rehabilitative horseback riding and to expand the social role of the horse industry.”
