First event for 300 children at Naeson Middle and High School gymnasium, senior club takes charge of weekend safety management

Opening of school facilities, linking sports activities for children and jobs for the elderly, pilot operation until October

On weekends, the closed school gym is used as a physical activity space for local children. The management gap caused by the opening of school facilities is addressed by linking it with jobs for the elderly.

On the 12th, the Gunpo Uiwang Office of Education first operated the ‘Children’s Sports Event Support Project in Connection with School Facility Opening’ at the gymnasium of Naeson Middle and High School in Uiwang. On this day, about 300 people, including children from Dream Tree Kindergarten and their parents, participated.

In the meantime, daycare centers and kindergartens have had difficulty securing space for large-scale sports events such as sports days, and schools have also often been passive in providing space due to the burden of safety and facility management due to opening facilities on weekends.

The Office of Education Support solved this problem by linking school facilities and local manpower. Seniors from the Uiwang Senior Club are deployed on site as weekend safety management personnel to manage entry and exit routes and are in charge of facility safety.

To promote the project, the Office of Education signed a business agreement last June with Uiwang Senior Club, base schools such as Naeson Middle and High School and Deokjang Middle School, the Gunpo Uiwang branch of the Korea Kindergarten Association, and the Uiwang branch of the Gyeonggi-do Daycare Association.

The Office of Education plans to conduct a pilot operation until October 31, review the operational performance, and discuss with local governments ways to expand the project to include daycare centers and kindergarten sports events in the spring of 2027.

Superintendent Jeong Sook-kyung said, “By gathering local resources and wisdom, we are practicing to break down barriers in the field,” and added, “We will develop a win-win model that provides sports space for children, relieves the burden of management for schools, and provides jobs for the elderly.”
