Memorial Event for Elderly Individuals Who Died Alone or by Suicide to Be Held on October 1

Co-hosted by over 20 religious and civic groups; calls for measures regarding basic rights and social safety nets for the elderly

A memorial event will be held to honor elderly individuals who passed away without family or social connections (unclaimed deaths) or died by suicide, and to urge for measures addressing elderly poverty and social isolation.

On October 1 at 2:00 PM, more than 20 religious and civic organizations—including the "Union for Hope in Old Age" (No-hu Huimang Union)—will host the "5th Memorial Event for Elderly Individuals Who Died Alone or by Suicide" at the Open Songhyeon Green Plaza in Seoul.

Organized to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons, the event aims to highlight issues facing the elderly from their own perspective and call on the government to formulate countermeasures. The organizers argue that structural issues, such as poverty and social isolation, lie behind these unclaimed deaths and suicides, and they are demanding a strengthening of social safety nets.

The program includes religious rites and memorial speeches, followed by performances such as the recitation of memorial poems, musical tributes, and *Neokjeon-chum* (a traditional dance for the spirits of the deceased); participants will also have the opportunity to offer flowers and incense.

Through a statement released on the day, the organizers plan to present seven demands: guaranteeing basic economic and social rights for the elderly; establishing measures for those who die alone or by suicide; enacting legislation to support elderly organizations; restructuring senior centers (*gyeongnodang*) into public welfare infrastructure; establishing a system to protect elderly human rights; officially designating October 1 as "Senior Citizens' Day"; and extending employment insurance coverage to seniors aged 65 and older.

Jang Dal-su, chair of the event's organizing committee, stated, "We will carry out various activities to reduce elderly suicides and unclaimed deaths, which constitute a social disaster." Meanwhile, the Senior Hope Union plans to build on the memorial event by joining forces with religious and civil society organizations to continue advocating for the establishment of comprehensive measures for a social safety net for the elderly.
