Gyeonggi Institute of Health and Environment Inspects Hazardous Substances in School Artificial Turf All 15 surveyed elementary schools in the province met safety standards; facilities over 10 years old also remained within limits.
The Gyeonggi Institute of Health and Environment conducted an inspection for hazardous environmental substances on artificial turf fields at 15 elementary schools across the province, finding that all schools met safety standards.
In collaboration with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, the Institute tested for seven types of phthalates and four heavy metals—cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury—at elementary schools in Suwon, Yongin, Hwaseong, Gwangju, Anyang, and Gunpo.
The total concentration of the seven phthalates ranged from 0.009% to 0.033% (averaging 0.017%), satisfying the KS standard of 0.1% or less. Maximum heavy metal concentrations were 0.59 mg/kg for cadmium, 11.02 mg/kg for chromium, 21.12 mg/kg for lead, and 0.036 mg/kg for mercury; all levels were well below half of the respective regulatory limits.
Notably, even the artificial turf at nine schools where the facilities had been installed more than 10 years ago tested within the safety limits for all parameters. The Institute plans to share these results with the Office of Education and continue monitoring aging artificial turf facilities.
