[Culture Column Jeong Geun-won] How do elderly fathers and mature children have a good relationship?

The image I had of my father 30-50 years ago is very different from what it is today. Father Hwang Chang-yeon, who treats many believers, gives a lecture that reveals the reality that has changed from the past. For example, in an era when children were born one after another, the eldest said that the reason why the eldest had a 60th birthday party and prayed for the best of luck was because the father had to be alive to feed the younger siblings and not have to play the role of head of the household. As it turns out, morals, ethics, customs, social structures and laws were created with the aim of resolving the anxieties of survival. Psychologist Maslow said that survival needs are the most fundamental in the five-level theory of needs. Survival is the fundamental anxiety of living things.

The relationship with the father also changes depending on the method of survival, the greatest anxiety of living things.

The same goes for animals. As we explore the animal world that depends on the conditions of survival, we can see that the relationships between fathers and children of animals are unimaginably diverse. The relationship between father and child has also changed according to the degree of survival of humans, hunting society, agricultural society, nomadic society, and industrial society.

Korea's happiness ranking is 102 out of 176 countries. It means that there are many unhappy fathers and children who are materially affluent. Among geriatric experts, the elderly in Korea say that they have unlimited responsibility for their children, and say that education is necessary for dependent parents who cannot become independent from their grown children. Children often rely on their father's attention, or they use this emotion to depend on their father.

There are also films that suggest a social family, in which people who are not related by blood gather to become a family. “The birth of a family” or “an aging family”. These films, which raise questions about the existing family, raise the question whether the family centered on blood is just another ideology.

Within every human being there is a child, a parent, and an adult ego.

We have to think from the root of what the natural human form was before civilization, such as morals, ethics, customs, and laws. Among psychological theories, there is a theory that says that all human beings have different selves inside, such as children, parents, and adults. Children, like their parents, are eager to teach, get angry when unreasonable, and seek protection as children. Adults also say that it is natural and happy to live in all three selves.

Can we really live like this? Control was essential for the survival of the agricultural society as a whole. As the society becomes more capable of surviving as an individual, social control weakens and the society becomes a society that can survive all three of the selves mentioned above. Young people's expressions of affection in public can also be explained by Marx's theory that their consciousness changes depending on the conditions of their existence.

How can we create communication between different fathers and children?

It has become a difficult society to demand a good relationship with the father as a product of the civilization called ‘filial piety’. There should be a lot of love balance because happy memories of giving and receiving love while sharing the three selves of human beings are accumulated. In order to survive, the elderly in Korea often lived at work all day without even taking a holiday. If these circumstances are not well understood, children may misunderstand their father's love. Father, like father, life becomes futile.

In this case, the father should apologize for not expressing his love. That way, the child's heart, which has become cold due to misunderstandings about his father, will melt. This is because emotional deficiency is the cause of the problem, not right or wrong. The reason I'm apologizing now is because I don't know the essence of the problem. Surviving the three selves introduced above is possible only through best friends. When a father and child become good friends like best friends, it elevates the parent-child relationship to the next level and sublimates it.
