Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, 2023 Gyeonggi High School Equalization Area Student Allocation Plan Announced

202 general high schools in 9 school districts, assign students through the ‘Pepper Addition for Retirement Support’

Applicants from foreign language high schools, international high schools, and private high schools can apply simultaneously

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent of Education Im Tae-hee) announced on July 21 a plan to allocate students to the Gyeonggi High School Equalization Area for the 2023 academic year.

The high school leveling areas in Gyeonggi-do are 9 school districts including Suwon, Seongnam, Anyang, Goyang, Ansan, Yongin, Bucheon, Gwangmyeong, and Uijeongbu.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education allocates students to 202 general high schools in 9 districts in the high school leveling area for the 2023 year using the ‘supplemental support pepper add-on’ method.

The placement of students in the high school equalization area is carried out in the first stage 'in-district assignment' and the second stage 'in-district assignment' based on the student's school preference ranking.

For intra-district allocation, regardless of the district where the middle school is located, students select 5 schools from all the schools in the district and determine the ranking of their applications by computer lottery.

In the district assignment, all students who were not assigned to a school in the district assignment stage are assigned by computer lottery to all schools in the district where the middle school is located, reflecting the student's desired ranking.

In Suwon, Seongnam, Anyang, Goyang, Ansan, and Yongin, six school districts carry out both the first stage ‘intra-district assignment’ and the second stage ‘in-district assignment’. However, Hyangdong High School in Goyang School District and Cheoin High School in Yongin School District are temporarily assigned only within the school district, not within the district.

The three school districts in Bucheon, Gwangmyeong, and Uijeongbu conduct only the first stage of ‘intra-district assignment’, and all schools within the school district are ranked from the first to the last, and assigned by computer lottery.

Meanwhile, applicants from foreign language high schools, international high schools, and private high schools can apply to school districts that are leveling off at the same time.

Simultaneous application can be done by selecting foreign language high school, international high school, and private high school as the first choice when writing the high school application ranking, and listing the high school in the desired order from the second choice to the school district and district.

If an applicant does not pass the foreign language high school, international high school, or private high school of their first choice, they will be assigned by lot based on their ranking of general high schools in the district and district starting with their second choice.

In addition, if a student who was forced to transfer due to school violence applies to a general high school in the same district as the victim, the victim will be assigned to a different school in consideration of priority.

From September, the provincial office of education is planning to hold an online briefing session for each district's education support offices, third-year middle school students, parents, and teachers to help them understand how to allocate students in high school equalization areas.

Kim Eun-jeong, head of the career and vocational policy department of the Provincial Office of Education, said, “I hope that middle schools in the Pyeongjunhwa area will understand exactly how to allocate students in the relevant district for the year 2023 and provide thorough counseling for students. We will do our best to ensure fair allocation.”
