안양시 한미친선협회(회장 신보영) 회원들이 지난 5월 21일 경기도 가평에 있는 미국 한국전 참전 기념비를 참배했다.

이번 참배는 안양시 한미친선협회 창립 30주년을 맞아 6.25전쟁에서 피로 맺어진 한미 양국의 우의를 되새겨 보기 위한 것으로 오는 9월 예정된 미국자매도시인 햄튼시와 가든그로브시 방문에 앞서 이루어졌다. 지난해에는 안양시승격 50주년을 축하하기 위해 햄튼시(시장 Donnie Tuck)와 가든그로브시(시장 Steve Jones)에서 시장을 포함한 각계 인사들이 안양시를 방문한 바 있다.

미국 한국전 참전 기념비는 6.25전쟁에서 보여준 미국의 업적을 기리기 위해 2016년 2월 4일 세워졌다.

1951년 4월 미군 제72전차대대는 목동리 전투에서 영연방 군을 지원해 중공군을 격퇴했고, 5월 26일에는 제213야전포병대대 240명이 북면 화악리 일대에서 단 한 명의 사상자도 없이 중공군 4,000 명을 상대로 승리를 거두어 ‘가평의 기적’이라고 불리고 있다.

그동안 안양시 한미친선협회는 미국 자매도시인 햄튼시와 가든그로브시 고교생 연수 지원, 6.25전쟁 참전용사 초청 및 기념재단 추진, 불우이웃 돕기 및 수해 성금 모금 등 의미 있는 사업을 펼쳐오면서 민간 외교 사절 및 지역봉사단체로 성장해 왔다.

신보영 한미친선협회장은 “한미친선협회의 미국 한국전 참전 기념비 참배는 동족상잔의 비극인 6.25전쟁의 아픔을 되돌아보는 좋은 계기가 되었으며, 앞으로 다시는 전쟁이 없는 평화로운 대한민국이 되길 기원한다”고 말했다.

Anyang City Korea-U.S. Friendship Association visits the U.S. Participation in Korean War Memorial in Gapyeong

Members of the Anyang City Korea-U.S. Friendship Association (Chairman Shin Bo-young) visited the U.S. Korean War Memorial in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do on May 21.

This visit was to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Anyang City Korea-U.S. Friendship Association and to reflect on the friendship between Korea and the U.S. that was forged in blood during the Korean War. It was conducted prior to a visit to Hampton City and Garden Grove, the American sister cities scheduled for September.
