요즈음 젊을 때 미국에서 특파원으로 활동했다가 귀국해서 살다 늘그막에 다시 미국에 가서 10년 이상 살고 있는 분을 만날 기회가 있었다. 미국에서 피부에 와 닿는 한류에 대해 물어보았다. 지금 미국뿐만이 아니라 유럽과 남미 등에서도 한류는 놀랄 정도로 퍼지고 있다고 한다. 날카로운 감각을 지닌 전직 기자 출신이라 한류에 대한 평가에 믿음이 갔다.

근대 한국이 현대화 되는 과정을 느낄 수 있다면…

비슷한 시기에 한국 현대화의 시작이라고 할 수 있는 박수근 화백 전시회장을 만들 계획을 가진 분을 만났다. 그의 말을 들으면서 한국적인 푸근한 감성을 그린 박수근 화백과 그와 대비되는 서구적 감성으로 한국의 감성을 추상화로 밀고 간 김환기 화백이 생각났다. 두 화백의 그림을 나란히 보는 것 자체가 한국이 현대로 넘어가는 시기 두개의 큰 감성의 흐름을 접하게 만들 것이다.

요즈음 인사동을 가면 전보다 많아진 외국인들을 만난다. 히잡을 쓴 여인들, 흑인 등 다양한 인종들을 다 볼 수 있다. 알고 보면 한국을 발전 모델로 하는 나라들이 참 많다. 그 나라 사람들에게 한국이 근대에서 현대화되는 과정을 바로 느끼게 할 수는 없을까? 성공적으로 현대화를 해내고 싶은 외국인들에게 두 화백을 함께 전시하는 전시회장은 참고가 될 것이다.

용산을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 문화지역

남산이 뒤에서 아름답게 받쳐주는 용산공원은 한국 문화의 정수를 품고 있는 국립중앙박물관과 한국의 역사를 바꾸어온 전쟁기념관이 있다. 역사를 이끌어온 두 힘인 문화와 폭력을 상징하는 두 곳이 있는 셈이다. 용산공원에 두 분 화백의 전시관이 생긴다면 한국이 선진화되는 격변기를 느끼며 미래로 향한 성찰을 이끌어낼 수 것이다. 자연스럽게 용산공원의 넓은 장소가 전통과 전통을 현대화하는 역동적인 실험 장소가 될 수 있다.

한국보다 외국에서 한국의 전통음악과 춤, 그리고 이들을 현대화한 예술을 볼 기회가 더 많다. 외국인들이 이런 공연을 통해 얻는 영감이 크다고 한다. 한국 전통 예술의 근원이 그동안 서구의 정신사를 이끌어온 신(神)과 이성 중심을 넘어서 있기 때문이다. 한국의 창(唱) 소리는 폭포 앞에서 소리 훈련을 하며 자연과의 깊은 감응을 통해 완성된다고 한다. 한국의 민속춤이라 할 수 있는 어깨춤도 전통 무용처럼 단전에서부터 움직여야 제대로 된 춤 선이 나온다.

용산이 새로운 정신적 용광로가 될 수 있다

유발 하라리의 ‘21세기를 위한 21가지 제언’을 읽으면 지금이 새로운 정신사가 곧 나타날 시점이라고 한다. 그도 신과 이성 중심의 패러다임과 다른 기준이 미래의 정신적 기초가 될 것으로 본다. 자연과 우주와 인간에 대한 관점이 기존과 달라야 한다는 뜻인데, 필자는 그래서 전 세계로 퍼지고 있는 K-culture를 주의 깊게 보아왔다. 외국인들은 정작 한국인이 한류의 거대한 영향을 잘 모른다고 말한다.

한국이 살아온 역사 자체가 수많은 이야기 거리를 제공하는 마지막 이야기 보루라고 한다. 서두에 소개한 전직 기자는 한국이 외국에 종자(種子)처럼 이야기 거리를 빼앗기면 우리 이야기 임에도 권리를 행사할 수 없다고 염려가 크다. 이분은 스스로 나서서 한국의 이야기 라이브러리를 만들고 있다.

고수부지에 돗자리를 깔고 닭튀김에 캔맥주를 마시는 게 외국인들의 필수 여행코스가 된지 오래다. 국립중앙박물관, 전쟁기념관, 용산공원, 이태원에서 고수부지까지 이어지는 큰 지역을 전략적으로 개발할 필요가 있다. 그러면 퐁피두센터 지역보다 더 큰 장소에서 한국의 문화력을 알리며 미래 정신을 태동시키는 장소가 될 수 있다. youngmirae@naver.com
