정은경 안양1동장을 지난 11월 22일 동장실에서 만났다. 정은경 동장은 안양1동 구석구석을 돌아보며 문제점을 찾아보고 안양일번가와 남부시장 상인들, 청년들과 안양1동 주민들과 소통과 화합함으로써 안양1동을 생동력이 넘치는 곳으로 만들려는 열정이 넘쳐흘렀다. 정은경 동장이 안양1동을 열정적으로 이끌어 가려는 모습이 많은 사람에게 감동을 주고 있다. 다음은 정은경 동장과의 일문일답.

안양1동 동장으로 부임하면서 동장님의 기본방침은 무엇인가?

“지난 7월 1일 안양1동 동장으로 발령 받았다. 안양시 31개 동의 선임 동인 역사와 전통이 서린 안양1동 동장으로서 주민들과 함께할 수 있게 되어 영광이다.

모든 일에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 소통과 화합이라고 생각한다.

안양1동은 지리적 특성상 철길을 중심으로 동쪽은 대단위 주거 단지와 맞은편은 안양일번가와 남부시장이 있는 상업 중심지역으로 나뉘어 있다. 주거지역과 상가 지역의 주민들과 소통해 진정 주민들이 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 파악해 주민의 복리 증진과 통합을 위해 최선을 다하겠다.”

최근 5개월 동안 열심히 해 오셨는데 현재 소감은?

“그동안 코로나19 등으로 인해 다소 침체되었던 우리 안양1동이 10월 시민 한마음 체육대회에 전 사회단체로 구성된 합동 응원단이 응원상을 수상하면서 화합된 모습으로 활력을 되찾아 가고 있는 것 같다. 이는 다른 종목의 수상보다 더 큰 의미가 있다.

그리고 독거노인 효 잔치, 기부의 날 행사를 통한 다양한 복지 서비스 등의 제공으로 주민 복지 증진 및 화합에 한 걸음 더 다가섰다고 생각한다.”

현재 추진하고 있는 주요 사업은?

“소통 강화다. 사람들과 더 깊이 소통하는 방법은 공감이라고 생각다. 공감은 상대방의 생각, 감정, 경험을 이해해 더 깊은 수준에서 주민들과 소통할 수 있게 해주는 놀라운 힘을 지니고 있다.

공감의 힘은 관계를 변화시키고 소통을 강화하며 긍정적인 환경을 조성할 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있기 때문에 우리에게 정말 필요하다.

주민자치회를 포함한 15개 사회단체 간의 소통, 주민들과의 지속적인 소통을 통해 신뢰를 구축하고 투명한 행정을 실현하는 것을 가장 중요하게 생각한다.

서로 이해하고, 안양1동 지역사회에 대한 관심도를 높여 통합과 발전을 위해 최선을 다하겠다.”

2025년도 중점사업은 무엇?

“주민참여 활성화 및 주민 복지 증진이다.

안양1동은 진정한 주민자치의 실현을 위한 주민자치회를 시범 운영 중이다. 2025년에 계획된 주민자치회의 사업을 적극 지원하고 다양한 커뮤니티 활동을 통해 주민 의견을 수렴하고 참여토록 유도하겠다.

또한, 주민의 생활 향상을 위한 다양한 복지 프로그램과 서비스를 제공토록 노력하겠다.”

안양1동 주민들, 주민자치위원들에게 하고 싶은 말씀이나 바라는 점이 있다면?

“우선 2024년 안양시 주민자치대회 우수상 수상을 진심으로 축하드린다. 그동안 수고하신 강성종 회장님을 비롯한 주민자치위원님들의 노력의 결실이라고 생각한다.

안양1동장으로서 주민자치회에 바라는 점은 자치회의 역량 강화와 진정한 소통으로 주민들의 참여를 확대하고, 투명한 운영을 통해 지역사회 발전에 큰 기여를 할 수 있기를 기대한다.”

정은경 동장은 주민들과 많은 대화를 통해 함께 고민하고, 문제해결의 방법을 찾으려고 노력하는 모습을 보였다. 주민자치위원으로서 부족한 점들도 관심을 가지고 이야기를 들어주었다. 그는 무엇보다 솔선수범하려는 사람이었다. 동장이라는 무게감도 있지만, 상대에게 기대하기 전에 먼저 손을 내밀고 같이 동참하려는 모습에 기자들은 감동을 받았다. 기자도 기자의 자리에서 무엇을, 어떻게 할지를 고민하고 함께 소통하고 싶어졌다.

“I will build trust and realize transparent administration through continuous communication with residents.”

I met Anyang 1-dong Mayor Jeong Eun-gyeong at the mayor’s office on November 22. She was full of passion to make Anyang 1-dong a vibrant place by looking around every corner of Anyang 1-dong to find problems and communicating and harmonizing with Anyang 1st Street and Nambu Market merchants, youth, and Anyang 1-dong residents. Many people are impressed by the way she passionately leads Anyang 1-dong. The following is a Q&A with Mayor Jeong Eun-gyeong.

What is your basic policy when you take office as the mayor of Anyang 1-dong?

“I was appointed as the mayor of Anyang 1-dong on July 1. As the head of Anyang 1-dong, a district with a long history and tradition, I am honored to be able to work with the residents.

I believe that the most important thing in everything is communication and harmony.

Due to its geographical characteristics, Anyang 1-dong is divided into a large-scale residential complex to the east of the railroad tracks and a commercial center with Anyang 1st Street and Nambu Market on the opposite side. I will communicate with residents in the residential and commercial areas to find out what the residents truly want and do my best to promote the welfare and integration of the residents.”

You have been working hard for the past five months. How do you feel now?

“Our Anyang 1-dong, which had been somewhat stagnant due to COVID-19, seems to be regaining its vitality with a united appearance as the joint cheering squad composed of all social groups won the cheering award at the Citizens’ One Heart Sports Festival in October. This is more meaningful than winning awards in other categories.

And I think we have come one step closer to promoting the welfare and harmony of the residents by providing various welfare services such as the filial piety feast for the elderly living alone and the donation day event.”

What are the main projects you are currently pursuing?

“Strengthening communication. I think that the way to communicate more deeply with people is through empathy. Empathy has the amazing power to understand the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of others and communicate with residents on a deeper level.

The power of empathy has the potential to change relationships, strengthen communication, and create a positive environment, so we really need it.

I think that building trust and realizing transparent administration through communication between 15 social groups including the resident autonomy council and continuous communication with residents is the most important.

I will do my best to understand each other and increase interest in the Anyang 1-dong community for integration and development.”

What are the key projects for 2025?

“Activating resident participation and improving resident welfare.

Anyang 1-dong is currently piloting a resident autonomy council to realize true resident autonomy. We will actively support the resident autonomy council projects planned for 2025 and encourage residents’ opinions and participation through various community activities.

In addition, we will strive to provide various welfare programs and services to improve the lives of residents.”

Any words or wishes for the residents of Anyang 1-dong and the residents’ self-government committee members?

“First of all, I sincerely congratulate you on winning the 2024 Anyang City Residents’ Self-government Competition Excellence Award. I think this is the result of the hard work of Chairman Kang Seong-jong and the residents’ self-government committee members.

As the head of Anyang 1-dong, what I hope for from the residents’ self-government council is to expand the participation of residents through strengthening the capacity of the council and genuine communication, and to make a great contribution to the development of the local community through transparent operation.”

Head Jeong Eun-gyeong showed her efforts to think together with residents and find ways to solve problems through many conversations. She also listened to their stories with interest about their shortcomings as a residents’ self-government committee member. Above all, she was a person who tried to lead by example. Although she had the weight of a head of a district, the reporters were moved by her efforts to reach out and join in before expecting anything from others. As a reporter, the reporters also wanted to think about what and how to do and communicate with them.
