K-pop등 다양한 한국의 문화들이 세계로 퍼져나갔다. 이들을 K-유니버스(K-universe)로 통칭한다. 그러나 중요한 핵심적 가치가 빠진 것 같았다. 영화, 음악, 음식, 화장품, 전통문화, 온돌, 등산 등 한국적인 것들이 각광을 받았지만 미래를 선도해나갈 철학과 비전 제시에는 미치지 못하였다. 그래서 무언가 아쉬웠다.

한국의 정가(正歌)를 조금 배우고 전통춤의 원리를 아는 필자는 명상을 통해 우주 원리에 맞닿으려는 선조들의 깊은 철학이 필요하다고 느끼고 있었다. ‘널리 인간 세상을 이롭게 하라’는 홍익인간(弘益人間) 정신은 자아(自我)에 갇힌 서구의 개인주의를 넘어서 미래를 이끌어갈 윤리의식이 될 수 있다고 생각했다. 어떻게 이를 널리 또 강력하게 알릴 수 있을까? 놀랍게도 윤석열의 비상계엄선포가 이를 해냈다.

선진국 ‘코리아’가 보여준 기적

10대 경제 강국이자 아시아의 모범적인 민주주의 국가 한국에서 비상계엄 사태가 일어나리라고는 누구도 생각하지 않았다. 3시간도 걸리지 않아 비상계엄을 무효화 한 한국의 국회의원들은 역사상 가장 짧은 계엄이란 신기록을 세웠다. 맨몸으로 탱크를 막아서고 총부리를 잡아 흔드는 시민들과 합작을 하며 만들어낸 기적이다. 민주주의를 지켜낸 이 모습은 세계를 감동시켰다.

윤석열의 퇴진 시위가 곧바로 이어졌다. 추운 겨울임에도 불구하고 매일 열린 시위는 또 한 번 세계를 감동시켰다. 외국의 특파원들은 계엄 사태보다 시위에 더 많은 기사를 할애하고 인터뷰를 했다. 계엄에 반대하는 한국의 시위는 서구처럼 폭력이 난무하지 않고 한마음으로 노래하고 춤추는 축제였다. 선결제와 음식과 핫팩 등을 서로 나누는 시위는 자아(自我)에 갇히지 않은 공동체 정신을 보여줬다. 어둠 속에 피어난 울긋불긋 응원봉들은 밤하늘에 함께 반짝이는 별들이었다. 영롱한 꽃밭이었다.

한국의 대중음악 가사가 서양과 달리 희망에 찬 가사들이 많다는 사실을 오래전부터 눈여겨 봐왔다. 비틀즈보다 BTS가 더 위대한 것은 스스로 성찰한 의미와 가치를 음악으로 전달하는 깊이 때문이다. 이번 시위에서 K-pop을 함께 노래하며 시위의 목표를 공유할 수 있었던 것도 이런 특성 덕분이다. 빌보드와 서구에서 시위에서 부른 한국 노래들이 역주행을 하며 탑을 찍고 있다. 시위에 사용된 응원봉은 서구에서 품귀 현상을 일으키고 있다. 대만과 태국은 벌써 한국의 아이돌 응원봉과 노래를 시위에 사용하며 폭력이 아닌 축제의 시위를 시도하고 있다. 이렇게 시위의 정신과 형식이 순식간에 세계에 퍼지고 있다. 윤석열의 계엄선포가 없었다면 이런 현상이 일어났을까?

새로운 정신이 세계를 바꾸고 있다

컴퓨터로 촘촘하게 연결된 새 문명은 서구의 철학을 넘어선 새로운 철학이 필요하다고 오래전부터 생각해왔다. AI의 발전으로 인도 설화의 인드라망의 구슬처럼 모두가 연결되어 서로가 서로를 비추는 문명이 시작되고 있다. 지구뿐만이 아니다. 1977년에 쏘아올린 보이저 1호와 2호는 태양계를 넘어 성간(星間) 여행을 하고 있다. 태양계를 넘어 우주와도 상호연결 되는 시대가 된 것이다. 일론 머스크는 지금도 화성에 인간을 이주시키는 사업을 진행하고 있다. 그는 인공위성도 4,500대나 쏘아 올려 전체 위성의 50%에 이른다. 인류의 환경이 ‘나’를 벗어난 ‘연결’이 기반이 되는 시대로 나아가고 있기 때문이다.

한국인은 일상에서 ‘우리’란 말을 무의식적으로 사용한다. ‘우리’ 엄마, ‘우리’ 학교, ‘우리’ 자식 등등 가장 개인적인 관계조차 ‘우리’로 표현한다. ‘우리 아내’, ‘우리 남편’이란 표현을 직역하면 서양인들은 기절초풍할 것이다. 한국인의 의식 속에 관계를 기반으로 서로를 바라보는 무의식이 ‘우리’란 개념으로 발현된다. 백만, 이백만이 모인 이번 시위에서 폭력도 쓰레기도 없어서 세계를 놀라게 했다. 탄핵이란 엄중한 정치 현상을 MZ 세대가 축제로 풀어낸 것도 기적이다. ‘나’ 위주로 상황을 보지 않고 연결된 관계망 속에서 상황을 입체적으로 파악하는 ‘우리’ 의식이 근본적인 원인이라고 생각한다.

근대정신을 꽃피운 서구의 철학은 ‘개인’의 존엄성을 세우는 인류사적 의식(意識)을 확립했다. 인류 문명이 촘촘한 그물망으로 연결되는 새로운 문명이 시작되며 새로운 의식(意識)이 필요해졌다. 한국은 AI를 사회 시스템에 적용해 가장 발달된 연결 사회망을 만들었다. 한국은 키오스크로 주문하고 결재하는 식당, 관공서, 교통, 공장의 로봇, 안내 로봇 등 세계 1,2를 다투는 첨단 사회다.

자동화된 사회는 정직한 사회여야 원활하게 작동한다. 필자가 사는 아파트에는 24시간 여는 무인 점포와 카페가 있다. 카드로 결재를 하고 잊고 두고 간 카드들이 10여 장이나 되는 것을 보고 놀랐었다. 이 정도로 한국 사회는 정직한 사회다. 덕분에 한국은 ‘상호 연결된 개인’으로 사는 첨단 사회가 가능하다. 여기에 한국인 특유의 정(情)이 인간의 모습을 간직한 첨단 사회를 만들어내고 있다. 이번 탄핵 시위에서도 사전결재로 전혀 본 적이 없는 사람들과 공조하며 ‘우리’ 의식을 발휘한 것도 한 예다.

세계에서 이번 탄핵 시위를 예의 주시하는 이유는 이런 문명사적 의미가 감지되기 때문이다. 윤석열은 비상계엄을 선포하면서 전혀 생각지도 않은 K-유니버스란 로켓을 쏘아 올리는 계기를 만들었다. 일시적으로 국격도 떨어지고 경제적으로도 큰 손해를 보고 있다. 그러나 로켓이 궤도에 안착하면 미래를 이끌어갈 새 문명을 위한 의식(意識)을 지구촌에 이식하는 크나큰 과업을 해낼 것이다.
