국내 최초 지방자치단체 건설 신도시인 광교신도시(공동사업시행자: 경기도, 수원시, 용인시, 경기주택도시공사)가 개발 20년 만에 준공됐다.

준공은 최근 경기융합타운 부지 조성 완료, 영동고속도로 부지 제척과 도로 옆 녹지 부분에 대한 수원시 인계 완료 등 마지막 8단계 과정이 완료된 데 따른 것이다.

경기도는 지난 2월 6일 국토교통부가 지난 1월 31일 공고를 통해 광교지구 택지개발사업의 준공일자를 2024년 12월 31일로 발표했다고 밝혔다.

택지개발사업은 종전 전·답 등의 지목을 신규 녹지 및 대지 등으로 확정하고, 도로나 상하수도 같은 기반시설을 조성한 후 공급하는 것으로, 광교신도시 조성은 이런 기반시설 조성과 공급작업이 완료됐다는 뜻이다.

2004년 6월 30일 당시 건설교통부가 택지개발예정지구로 지정하면서 시작된 광교신도시는 2005년 12월 정부가 우리나라에서는 처음으로 지방자치단체가 사업시행을 하겠다는 개발계획을 확정 고시한 후 2023년까지 1~7단계 사업 준공 등 순차적으로 진행됐다.

광교신도시 경기융합타운에는 경기도청, 경기도의회, 경기도교육청, 한국은행 경기본부, 경기주택도시공사, 이의119안전센터가 입주를 완료했으며 올해 경기신용보증재단 입주, 경기도서관 개관할 예정이다. 전시관 및 중소회의실 등을 갖춘 수원컨벤션센터와 수원지방법원·검찰청, 고등법원·검찰청 등의 광교 법조타운도 2019년 완공해 자족도시 기능을 지원하고 있다.
