임태희 교육감이 지난 2월 4일부터 9일까지 미국 워싱턴주 교육청·벨뷰 교육청·캐나다 버너비시 교육청 등 북미 교육기관의 담당자를 만나 경기미래교육의 세계화를 위한 협력을 모색한 후 귀국했다. 임 교육감은 경기미래교육의 우수성을 적극적으로 알림으로써 세계를 이끄는 북미 선진국과의 교육 교류에 새로운 물꼬를 텄다.

임태희 교육감은 “이번 방문을 통해 경기교육의 방향성과 우수성을 다시 한 번 확인했다. 경기교육의 세계화는 이제부터 시작”이라며, “경기도 학생이 자기 주도성을 갖고 세계 시민으로 성장할 수 있도록 선진국과의 공유를 강화해 경기미래교육을 더욱 발전시키겠다”고 강조했다.

이번 교류 협력에는 성남교육지원청, 경기도교육청국제교육원 등 교육청 관계자가 함께 참여했다. 각 지역과의 인사 교류 정책, 학교‧학생 교류, 공유학교 학생들의 문화공연 교류 등에도 속도를 낼 예정이다.

임 교육감은 첫 일정으로 지난 4일 주 시애틀 대한민국총영사관과 함께 미국 워싱턴주 교육청 주요 관계자와 만나 한국어 교육과 온라인 교육 확대 방안을 논의하고, 미래교육 실현을 위한 3자 업무협약을 체결했다.

세 기관은 업무협약에서 △미래교육을 위한 교육정책 및 기관 간 교류 확대 △학생 주도의 다양한 상호 교류 활동 지원 협력 △언어 교육을 위한 교수학습 방법 개발 협력 등을 강화하기로 약속했다.

임 교육감은 이어서 벨뷰 교육청을 방문, 벨뷰교육청으로부터 한국어 수업을 위한 다양한 교육과정과 자료에 대한 협조를 요청받았다. 또한 한국어 교육을 진행 중인 ‘타코마 스타디움 고등학교’에서도 수업에 참고할 수 있는 교육 정보 제공을 요청받았다.

이에 임 교육감은 지난 2023년 동두천·남양주·안산을 시작으로 올해 31개 지역에 확대하는 한국어 집중교육기관 ‘경기한국어랭귀지스쿨(한국어 공유학교)’을 거듭 강조했다.

‘경기한국어랭귀지스쿨’은 부모 중 한 명 이상이 외국인이어서 국내 교육에 적응하지 못하는 청소년에게 특화된 한국어 교육을 제공하는 교육기관이다. 학생과 교사 모두 90% 이상 효과적이라는 설문 조사 결과가 나올 정도로 반응이 긍정적이다.

경기도교육청은 성공 모델을 바탕으로 교육과정과 수업내용을 더욱 내실화해 경기교육의 우수 교육활동을 북미 현지에서도 적용할 수 있도록 협력할 방침이다.

임태희 교육감은 이후 일정으로 7일 캐나다 버나비시에 위치한 ‘바이른 크릭 커뮤니티 학교’에 방문했다. 이곳에서 지역사회의 적극적인 참여로 이뤄지는 다양한 커뮤니티 프로그램을 접한 뒤 ‘다양성+유연성=자율성’이라는 교육격차 해소 공식을 도출했다.

Superintendent Lim Tae-hee visits North American educational institutions to seek cooperation for globalization of Gyeonggi Future Education

Emphasis: “We will strengthen sharing with advanced countries to further develop Gyeonggi Future Education”

Superintendent Lim Tae-hee met with officials from North American educational institutions, including the Washington State Office of Education, Bellevue Office of Education, and Burnaby City Office of Education in Canada from February 4 to 9 to seek cooperation for the globalization of Gyeonggi Future Education and returned to Korea. By actively promoting the excellence of Gyeonggi Future Education, Superintendent Lim opened a new door to educational exchange with advanced countries in North America that lead the world.

Superintendent Lim Tae-hee said, “Through this visit, we have once again confirmed the direction and excellence of Gyeonggi Education. The globalization of Gyeonggi Education is just beginning,” and emphasized, “We will further develop Gyeonggi Future Education by strengthening sharing with advanced countries so that Gyeonggi Province students can grow into global citizens with self-directedness.”

Officials from the Seongnam Office of Education and the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education International Education Institute also participated in this exchange and cooperation. We will also speed up personnel exchange policies with each region, school and student exchanges, and cultural performance exchanges between students from shared schools.

As his first schedule, Superintendent Lim met with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle and key officials from the Washington State Board of Education on the 4th to discuss ways to expand Korean language education and online education, and signed a three-party business agreement to realize future education.

In the business agreement, the three organizations promised to strengthen the following: △Expand educational policies and exchanges between institutions for future education, △Cooperation in supporting various student-led mutual exchange activities, and △Cooperation in developing teaching and learning methods for language education.

Superintendent Lim then visited the Bellevue Board of Education, where he received a request for cooperation on various curricula and materials for Korean language classes. He also received a request from Tacoma Stadium High School, which is currently conducting Korean language education, to provide educational information that can be referenced in classes. Accordingly, Superintendent Lim repeatedly emphasized the ‘Gyeonggi Korean Language School (Korean Language Sharing School)’, a Korean language intensive education institution that will be expanded to 31 regions this year, starting with Dongducheon, Namyangju, and Ansan in 2023.

‘Gyeonggi Korean Language School’ is an educational institution that provides specialized Korean language education to youth who have difficulty adapting to domestic education because at least one of their parents is a foreigner. The response is so positive that a survey result showed that it is more than 90% effective for both students and teachers.

Based on the successful model, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education plans to further enhance the curriculum and class content and cooperate so that Gyeonggi Education’s excellent educational activities can be applied in North America.

Superintendent Lim Tae-hee then visited ‘Byrne Creek Community School’ located in Burnaby, Canada on the 7th. After experiencing various community programs there with the active participation of the local community, he came up with the formula for resolving the educational gap of ‘diversity + flexibility = autonomy.’
