과천시 애향장학회가 지난 3월 25일 시청 대강당에서 ‘2025년도 장학증서 수여식’을 개최, 지역 내 대학생 250명에게 장학금 총 7억5,000만 원을 전달했다.

올해 선발된 장학생은 성적 우수장학생 75명, 일반장학생 88명, 특기장학생 4명, 농업인장학생 3명, 희망복지장학생 80명 등이다. 희망복지장학생에는 기초생활수급자, 다자녀, 장애인가정, 한부모가정 자녀 등이 포함됐다. 선정된 학생에게는 연간 최대 300만 원 이내에서 학비가 지원된다.

과천시 애향장학회는 1993년 설립돼 지역인재 양성을 위해 현재까지 중·고·대학생에게 장학금을 지원하고 있다. 장학금은 기부금과 시민들의 참여로 조성된 기금으로 운영되며, 성적·형편·특기 등을 종합적으로 반영해 장학생을 선발한다.

과천시는 애향장학회를 통해 지역 청년들의 학업과 진로에 실질적인 도움을 주고, 지역사회와 연계된 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 기반을 마련하고 있다. 특히 다양한 배경의 학생들이 포용적으로 선발돼 교육격차 해소에도 기여하고 있다. 230억 원 규모의 장학기금을 조성 및 운영하여 현재까지 중·고·대학생 5,678명에게 총 114억2,000만 원의 장학금을 지급했다.
