사단법인 빚진자들의집이 지난 6월 25일부터 27일까지 3일간 안양아트센터 1층 갤러리 미담에서 ‘하늘새 새봄에 씨앗을 물고’라는 제목으로 열여섯 번째 자선나눔 ‘새활용’ 전시회를 개최했다. ‘하늘새 새봄에 씨앗을 물고’라는 제목의 자선나눔 행사는 2007년 시작해서 코로나 시기를 제외하고 매년 개최돼 올해 16회에 이르렀다.

2010년 대표로 취임해 16년째 (사)빚진자들의집을 이끌고 있는 송용미 대표를 지난 26일 오후 전시회장에서 만나 전시회 개최 취지, 봉사활동을 하는 이유 등에 대해 들어봤다. 송용미 대표와의 인터뷰를 일문일답 형식으로 재구성한다.

매년 이 행사를 개최하는 이유는?

“코로나 3년을 빼면 19 년째 ‘자선나눔 전시회’를 개최하고 있는 셈이다. 우리가 사회복지 기관인데 후원금만으로는 살 수가 없지 않나. 어쨌든 한 해 한 해 살아야 하기 때문에 기금을 마련할 겸 해서 전시회를 개최했다.

여기 전시회에 여러 예술가들이 참여해서 이렇게 나눔 하는 게 쉽지 않다. 전시회를 통해서 여러 예술가들이 교류할 수 있는 장을 만드는 것도 또 다른 목적의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 우리는 기금을 조성하고 예술가들은 작품 기부를 통해서 사회 교류, 사회공헌 하는 장이 형성되는 거다.”

올해 전시회가 그동안 했던 전시회들과 달라진 점이 있다면?

“매번 같은 컨셉으로 할 수는 없으니까 매년 조금씩은 바꾼다. 올해는 환경 문제에 초점을 맞췄다. 아이들하고 같이 재활용 용품을 만들어서 환경 문제를 알리고, 또 이 전시회에 오신 분들한테 생활 속에 얼마나 많은 환경 문제가 있는지 알리는 데 초점을 맞추자 이렇게 컨셉을 ‘환경’으로 했다.

저기 보이는 것처럼 생활에서 사용한 병뚜껑을 활용한다든지 아니면 과일 싸는 포장지로 꽃을 만든다든지. 저게 아이들하고 같이 몇 달 동안 작업을 한 거다. 이런 활동을 통해서 아이들도 환경 문제에 대해서 인식이 달라지기도 한다. 또 사람들이 버려지는 거에 대한 인식이 좀 약하지 않나. 그래서 저 포토존을 주로 환경 문제를 중심으로 꾸몄다.

예술가들은 이제 생활하면서 자신이 만든 걸 기부했다. ‘뭐라도 상관없다. 당신들이 만들었으면 그걸 기부해 주라. 그러면 그거 가지고 우리가 기금 마련을 하겠다.’ 이렇게 전시회 출품 작품들이 구성됐다.”

후원자들이 애장품을 기증한 게 있던데……

“이름이 있는 분들이 애장품을 기증해 주시는 거다. 이분들은 자기 직업이 있으니까 작품을 기부하기는 쉽지 않다. ‘선물을 받았는데 사용하지 않고 있는 것들이 있다면 그걸 주시라. 그러면 다른 분들이 잘 사용할 수 있지 않겠냐’ 해서 그분들이 기증한 물품들을 전시한 거다.

또 식초나 술 같은 생활 필수 식품도 다 직접 만들어서 기부한 거라서 의미가 크다. 아마 전국에서 이런 데는 없을 거다.”

‘하늘새 새봄의 씨앗을 물고’란 전시회 제목이 특이하다. 어떤 의미인가?

“저기 저 작품이 ‘하늘새’다. 문화예술인 대표로 전시회에 참여하고 계신 이강식 작가가 만든 작품이 바로 ‘하늘새’다. 이강식 선생님은 원래는 조각가신데 예전에 중앙청 천장을 조각하셨던 분이다. 나이가 좀 있으시다. 이분이 단풍나무로 조각하시면서 하늘새라는 걸 만드셨다. 나무를 조각해서 새처럼 만들어서 ‘이 새가 행운을 갖다 준다. 또는 좋은 소식을 전해준다’라는 의미를 가지고 있다. 저 하늘새에 아마 번호가 있다. 지금 만 몇 번째까지 나갔을 거다.

전시회 컨셉도 그걸 살리자 해서 제목을 그렇게 짓게 됐다. 하늘새가 여러 가지 소식들을 전할 수도 있으니까.”

이강식 선생은 안양에 거주하시나? 안양 태생이신가?

“지금 현재는 부여에 계신다. 원래는 안양에 계셨는데 지난해에 이사 가셨다. 안양 태생은 아닌데 안양에서 몇 십 년을 사셔서 안양에 계신 분들을 웬만하면 다 아신다. 안양에 계셨기 때문에 우리와 연결이 돼서 이 일을 1회 때부터 오랫동안 같이 하셨다. 이분이 화가든 도예가든 예술가들을 다 소개해 주셨다.”

빚진자들의집의 앞으로 활동 계획은?

“지금은 우리 자체가 그렇게 큰 활동은 하지 않고 일상 활동과 ‘몰래 산타’ 이 두 가지만 하고 있다. ‘일상적으로 아이들 돌보는 거’와 ‘몰래 산타.’

코로나 이후로는 우리가 약간 침체돼 있다. 올해 기금이 마련되면 ‘몰래 산타’를 다시 시작해 볼까 하고 있다. ‘몰래 산타’는 전시회보다는 오래 돼서 올해가 23회 째가 된다.”

6월에 정권이 바뀌었는데 영향이 좀 있나?

“현재로서는 정권이 바뀌어서 영향 받는 것은 그다지 없다. 그러나 기관 입장에서 보면 사회복지기관들이 좀 혜택을 볼 수 있다고 본다. 또 하나는 사회가 안정이 되면 후원금이 조금이라도 늘어나지 않을까 기대하고 있다. 그 동안은 후원금이 워낙 줄어서 코로나 이후에는 뭐 어떻게 할 수가 없는 상황이었다. 남을 돕는다는 게 자기 스스로가 좀 안정감이 생겨야 한다고 하잖는가. 그렇지만 성숙한 분들은 그것과 상관없이 기부를 한다. 기부를 해야 내가 스스로 안정감을 찾는다. 1만 원이든 5,000 원이든 기부를 하면 내가 가치 있는 행동을 하고 가치 있는 삶을 산다는 걸 느낄 수 있게 해준다.”

평생을 봉사활동을 하는 이유는?

“나 사느라고 바쁜 게 아니라 남을 돌보는 일에 조금이라도 기여를 해야 나의 삶이 의미가 있어진다. 나도 기관 일을 하고 있지만 다른 기관을 돕는다. 그런 일을 해야 내가 스스로 살아 있다고 할 수도 있고 서로 간에 그런 의미 있는 삶을 살아가야 또 힘이 되고 금방 무너지지 않는다.

일상적으로 아이들하고 같이 있을 때 우리 선생님들한테도 ‘여기 와서 아이들이 행복하면 그 행복했던 기억 때문에 아이들이 커서 힘든 일을 겪을 때 그걸 극복할 수 있는 힘이 난다’고 얘기한다. 그게 가장 큰 거라고 생각한다.”

맞는 말씀인데……

“선생님들이 아이들하고 하루를 정말 행복하게 지낼 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 이 일도 뭐 그런 거다. 아이들 지금 여기에 와 있지만 와서 그림도 보고 사람들이 어떻게 하는지 본다. 또 사람들이 이일을 통해 아이들을 돕는다는 걸 설명을 한다. 아이들이 여기 와서 그림 그리면서 눕기도 하고 뛰기도 하고 그러잖나. 어느 전시회에서 그럴 수 있겠는가. 그런 경험을 통해서 아이들이 크면 어느 한쪽 기억에는 남아 있을 거 아닌가. 그러면 참 좋겠다.”

작품은 많이 팔렸나?

“생각보다는 많이 나갔다. 어제 손님들이 많이 오셔서 꽤 많이 팔렸다. 경기가 많이 어려워져서 걱정을 많이 했는데 생각보다는 많이 나가서 마음이 좀 풀렸다.”

어떤 각오로 전시회를 준비했나?

“올해 전시회와 상관없이도 우리 선생님들이 일상이 너무 바쁘다. 아침부터 밤까지 근무하니까. 그런데 그 사이사이에 이런 작품들을 다 만들어야 된다. 선생님들이 아이들하고 같이 만든 거 손도 봐야 되고. 사실 힘들었다.

그런데 선생님들도 행복해야 하지 않나?

우리가 전시회를 3일 동안 하고 있다. 그래서 ‘올해는 좀 마음을 비우자. 기금이 얼마가 마련이 되든 그것과 상관없이 3일간의 여행을 잘 마쳐보자’ 이렇게 말했다.

‘우리 스스로 여기 있으면서 힐링하면 그걸로 만족하자.’

어제 날씨가 비도 오고해서 걱정을 많이 했는데 많이 와주셔서 너무 감사했다.

억지로 하지는 않지만 어쨌든 기쁘게 3일 동안 여기 잘 있다 보면 또 그 기운 갖고 어떻게든지 살아가지지 않을까?”

[Interview] Song Yong-mi, CEO of Debt-in-the-House, who held the 16th Charity Sharing Exhibition

“My life becomes meaningful only when I contribute even a little to caring for others.”

The Debt-in-the-House Foundation held its 16th Charity Sharing Exhibition titled ‘Seasonal Birds, Seeds in the Spring’ at Gallery Midam on the first floor of Anyang Art Center from June 25 to 27. The charity sharing event titled ‘Seasonal Birds, Seeds in the Spring’ began in 2007 and has been held every year except during the COVID-19 period, reaching its 16th anniversary this year.

We met CEO Song Yong-mi, who has been leading Debt-in-the-House since 2010, at the exhibition hall on the afternoon of the 26th to hear about the purpose of the exhibition and the reason for volunteering. We reconstructed the interview with CEO Song Yong-mi in a Q&A format.

Why do you hold this event every year?

“Excluding the three years of COVID, this is the 19th year we have been holding the ‘Charity Sharing Exhibition.’ We are a social welfare organization, so we can’t survive on donations alone, right? We have to survive each year, so we held the exhibition to raise funds.

It is not easy for many artists to participate in the exhibition and share like this. Another purpose is to create a place where many artists can interact through the exhibition. We raise funds, and artists donate their works to create a place for social interaction and social contribution.”

What is different about this year’s exhibition from the ones you have held in the past?

“We can’t do the same concept every time, so we change it a little every year. This year, we focused on environmental issues. We focused on making recycled items with the children to raise awareness of environmental issues, and also to inform the visitors to this exhibition about how many environmental issues exist in our daily lives. We made the concept ‘environment.’

As you can see there, we use bottle caps from our daily lives, or we make flowers with fruit wrappers. That’s what we worked on with the children for several months. Through these activities, the children’s awareness of environmental issues also changes. Also, people’s awareness of waste is a bit weak. That’s why we decorated the photo zone mainly with environmental issues.

The artists now donate what they made while living. ‘It doesn’t matter what. If you made something, donate it. Then we’ll raise funds with it.’ That’s how the works for the exhibition were organized.”

The sponsors donated their favorite items… …

“People with names donate their favorite items. Since they have their own jobs, it’s not easy for them to donate their works. ‘If you have received gifts but are not using them, please give them to me. Then, wouldn’t other people be able to use them better?’ So I exhibited the items they donated.

Also, they made and donated essential food items like vinegar and alcohol themselves, so it’s very meaningful. I think there’s probably no other place like this in the country.”

The title of the exhibition, ‘Sky Birds Carrying the Seeds of Spring,’ is unique. What does it mean?

“That work over there is called ‘Sky Bird.’ The work created by artist Lee Kang-sik, who is participating in the exhibition as a representative of cultural and artistic figures, is ‘Sky Bird.’ Mr. Lee Kang-sik is originally a sculptor who used to carve the ceiling of the Central Government Complex. He is quite old. He created something called Sky Bird while carving maple trees. He carved the tree into a bird shape and it means, ‘This bird brings good luck. Or, it conveys good news.’ There is probably a number on that Sky Bird. It must have been the last one.

The exhibition concept was to reflect that, so we decided to give it that title. Sky Bird can convey various messages.”

Does Mr. Lee Kang-sik live in Anyang? Were you born in Anyang?

“He is currently in Buyeo. He originally lived in Anyang, but he moved last year. He is not born in Anyang, but he has lived in Anyang for decades, so he knows most of the people in Anyang. Since he was in Anyang, he connected with us and has been working with us for a long time since the first time. He introduced us to artists, whether painters or potters.”

What are the future plans of the Debtors’ House?

“Right now, we are not doing much, and we only do two things: daily activities and ‘Secret Santa.’ ‘Daily taking care of the kids’ and ‘Secret Santa.’

We have been in a bit of a slump since COVID. If we get the funds this year, we are thinking of starting ‘Secret Santa’ again. ‘Secret Santa’ has been around longer than the exhibition, so this year is the 23rd.”

The government changed in June. Has that had any effect?

“Currently, there is not much impact from the change in government. However, from the perspective of the organization, I think social welfare organizations can benefit a little. Another thing is that I hope that donations will increase a little when society stabilizes. Until now, donations have decreased so much that there was nothing we could do after COVID. They say that helping others requires a sense of stability. However, mature people donate regardless. I find stability in myself when I donate. Whether it is 10,000 won or 5,000 won, donating makes me feel that I am doing something worthwhile and living a worthwhile life.”

Why do you volunteer your whole life?

“I’m not busy living my own life, but I have to contribute a little to caring for others so that my life becomes meaningful. I also work for an organization, but I help other organizations. I have to do that kind of work to be able to say that I’m alive, and we have to live meaningful lives together, so we have strength and don’t collapse easily.

When I’m with children on a daily basis, I tell our teachers, ‘If the children come here and are happy, that happy memory will give them the strength to overcome hardships when they grow up.’ I think that’s the biggest thing.”

That’s right… …

“I’m helping teachers spend a day with the children really happily. This is also something like that. The children are here now, but they come here to see the pictures and see what people are doing. I also explain that people are helping the children through this work. The children come here to draw pictures, lie down, and run around, right? Which exhibition would be able to do that? I think that kind of experience will remain in the children’s memories when they grow up. That would be great.”

Did your work sell well?

“It sold out more than I thought. We had a lot of customers yesterday, so we sold quite a lot. I was worried because the economy was getting tough, but I feel a little better because it sold out more than I expected.”

What kind of determination did you have when preparing for the exhibition?

“Even without the exhibition this year, our teachers are very busy. They work from morning to night. But they have to make all these works in between. They have to take care of the things they made with the kids. It was hard.

But shouldn’t the teachers be happy too?

We’re holding the exhibition for three days. So I said, ‘Let’s empty our minds this year. Regardless of how much money we have, let’s finish the three-day trip well.’

‘Let’s be satisfied if we heal ourselves while we’re here.’

I was worried because the weather was rainy yesterday, but I’m so grateful that so many people came.

I’m not forcing it, but if we stay here happily for three days, won’t we be able to live with that energy somehow?”
