[Mongolia 3 Nights 4 Days Travelogue] (June 1-4, 2025)

“Getting drunk on the beautiful nature while looking at the wide grasslands”

Yang Hye-kyung, Anyang City Book Club ‘My Storytelling’ member

Departing Incheon Airport at 11:20 AM / Arriving at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar (Red Hero) at 1:50 PM (1 hour time difference) Takes 3 and a half hours.

Day 1

I almost missed my flight while chatting leisurely with my roommate whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. I was shocked and dumbfounded by the unbelievable reality as I hurriedly got on the plane only when I shouted at the passengers who hadn’t boarded Ulaanbaatar yet. When I got on the plane, I felt good because there were two seats with windows, but I couldn’t get over the shock for a long time. This is my fourth trip with my roommate whom I met on my trip to Jeju Island last year. She was my junior and I felt comfortable in many ways, so she became a great companion. At Incheon Airport, we went to the travel agency information desk, received guidance, and went through the procedures for each person to the destination airport. Since I had flown for 14 hours to Spain, I felt like I had already arrived. I didn’t know who was in our group until I arrived in Mongolia. There were two other teams that had come with Hana Tour, but I found out that they had different departure areas. At Chinggis Khan Airport in Ulaanbaatar, we met someone holding a Hana Tour sign and got on the bus with 18 people. The guide was a local, a pretty woman in her 30s named ‘Ddolma’ who spoke Korean very well. The airport was a very small airport where only our T’way Air team was checking in, and everyone except for the airport staff and employees were Korean. Anyway, there were a lot of Korean tourists wherever we went. When we left the airport, Mongolia was still in winter, so we took out our padded jackets and put them on. Mongolia has a population of 3.5 million and is about 7 times larger than our country. The altitude is about 1,500, and it is cold for about 250 days a year, and the temperature difference between day and night is large.

When a car runs through a wide grassland, horses, sheep, and goats pass by on the road, the car stops and waits. The large herd moves in unison according to the shepherd’s voice. Sometimes, a dog helps the shepherd by following the herd. There was a ‘Suwon Citizen’s Forest’ where Suwon people came and planted trees along the way, which I was proud of and proud of.

Since the country is large, it is said that students live in dormitories and only come home during vacations because it is inconvenient to go to school. Also, ordinary people have a car because it is difficult to travel around the wide area. It is said that most people buy used cars from Japan rather than new cars because the economy is not good. Small cars from our country are rare, and large cars are common.

When I asked, ‘Why are there so many gers in a national park?’, I was told that individuals lease land from the government to build gers, and the government gives young people land to build gers on the land and let them operate them. In a reality where jobs are scarce and wages are low, if we preserve and manage the nature we have inherited well, we can make a lot of money just from tourism. If we build a lot of gers and people increase like this, I think nature will be damaged and won’t last long. I sincerely hope that we don’t follow in the footsteps of famous tourist destinations around the world. I hope that this beautiful nature will be well preserved with a long-term perspective rather than immediate sweetness. It is said that the life expectancy of a man is about 67 years, and it seems that life is still very poor. That is why many people want to come to our country to work and it is said that it is a country they long for.

When I entered the ger camp accommodation in the Terelj National Park in the Mongolian steppe of Gorkhi region, there was no mart, so I bought water, snacks, and fruit to last for two days. I exchanged dollars, but the mart here only accepts credit cards. Since there are no cards that can be used overseas, I brought a card that I got on purpose, but it was inconvenient.

On the way to the ger, I visited the Genghis Khan statue and the memorial museum. It is the world’s largest equestrian statue made of 250 tons of steel. Terelj National Park, which comes to mind when thinking of Mongolia, is located 70 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar and is a representative tourist attraction in Mongolia. On the way, I saw ‘Awo’, a symbol of Mongolian shamanism. It is a place similar to a Seonghwangdang in Korea, where stones are piled up. It is said to prevent disasters and is a place to pray for health and longevity. I also put stones on the stones and put my hands together.

Before boarding the plane, I ate the fried tofu sushi I brought from home for breakfast. There was no in-flight meal, so I had a snack. The pork ribs that came out for dinner were not actually ribs, but they tasted like honey. I ate with a couple in my group, and the husband grilled the meat well, so it was delicious. It felt like I was in a Korean restaurant because most of the people were Korean. They say the economy is tough, but there are many Koreans when you go to a travel destination and the travel courses are similar, so I think I often meet them at restaurants.

There were 20 or 30 modern gers in the accommodations, and we were assigned A12, so the two of us went into a room with four beds and unpacked our bags. The chatter at Incheon Airport continued on the plane and even into the accommodations late into the night. Since it was a trip where I expected to see the pouring stars, I gave up sleep and waited to go out of the ger. It was cold, but it wasn’t that great, so I came back, but the photographer said that he gave up sleep and waited until later to capture it on film. I wish the guide had taken more care of it. There were many gers crowded together in a wide meadow, making it look like a rural village. I tossed and turned the whole time, perhaps because I was nervous about the unfamiliar outdoor ger accommodation.

Day 2

I woke up to the sound of the alarm and didn’t want to waste the first morning of my trip just like that, so I went outside and pressed the shutter to see the rising sun. Looking at the wide meadow around the ger, I felt intoxicated by the beautiful nature. Maybe that’s why people here have eyesight of 3.0 degrees. While my eyes were enjoying it, three puppies came up to me and waggled their tails happily. I was scared and said, “No, no,” and turned back, but they were running around the wide meadow by themselves. I thought it would be okay to let them run around like this, but I was a little anxious because they weren’t used to it. After that, I saw that he approached everyone friendly and got along well. I thought again that this is the natural and truly happy life of a dog. It is a beautiful landscape that blends in with nature. I feel sorry and sorry for the lives of dogs living in cities that can be commonly seen anywhere in our country.

After breakfast, I started the day more leisurely than on other trips. The restaurant in the ger was mostly used by Koreans, so the signs were written in Korean, and everyone except the employees spoke Korean. I got on the bus and went to the Ariyaval Tibetan Buddhist temple. I climbed the 108 steps, which are important in Buddhism, to the ‘Dawn Temple’ shaped like an elephant, while gasping for breath. It is said that it was restored in 1988 as one of the few remaining temples in Mongolia after many temples were destroyed due to the suppression of Buddhism during the Russian military regime. When I said that it was too hard and I wouldn’t go up, my roommate scolded me, saying, “What are you talking about, the person who emphasized that ‘travel products should include trekking’?” I followed my roommate, Bombam, into the temple and prayed. Wherever there is a place to pray, I think of my older child. I clasp my hands together and hope that he will live happily, not just working, but also engaging in hobbies.

The temple was on a high ground, so I was out of breath, but the scenery of the valley across the way made my steps lighter. It was a time to think again about how religion affects people and the meaning of religion. What does the cloth tied to the awor mean? What did they pray for so earnestly? How is religion different in this sparsely populated area and in a city with a developed population? I think the temple here will be more memorable because of its beautiful scenery. I came down and moved again to see Turtle Rock. Turtle Rock is a natural sculpture created by thousands of years of weathering and is said to be a famous landmark of Terelj National Park.

Next, there was a horseback riding experience. I thought it was a bit dangerous because they had to sign a waiver before riding. While waiting, I felt uneasy thinking about the life of an animal from the horse’s perspective. I felt sorry for the fate of the horse, who was somehow tamed and lived a life of being used. In the book ‘Guns, Germs, and Steel’, there is a story about the first animal to be tamed. It is said that when people started farming, they started raising animals that were helpful and easy to tame. I thought about how good it would be to live in the wild without being tamed. Even if a caged bird is guaranteed safety and food, it would dream of a life flying high in the sky.

A safety officer holds the reins of two people and guides them along the way.

The feeling of everyday life from a slightly higher perspective on the horse was different. I held on tightly in case I fell, and my arms felt sore for a while. As the wind blew and it got cold, I was worried about catching a cold. I was worried because the horse stopped and I was worried, but when one of them urinated, the three that were walking with it also urinated at the same time. How did they know and urinate at the same time?

The eagle experience is taking pictures of an eagle. He also felt uncomfortable because his life was completely like a toy with his feet tied up. Seeing his limp body made me feel uncomfortable as if someone had tied my feet. My arms kept hurting after that because I held on so tightly while riding a horse and driving a jeep on an unpaved road. As a tour guide, I went into the gers of people living nearby to look into their lives and tasted the rock-hard snacks made from hardened milk and cow milk tea. The gers face south. Guests are told to sit on the left side when they enter.

Next, I took pictures wearing traditional Mongolian clothing as part of a traditional Mongolian experience.

Next, I rode a Purgong and went on a Terelj scenic tour. Purgong is a small jeep that was modified from a military transport vehicle made during the former Soviet Union. It is an experience where you can experience the thrill of driving a car up an unpaved hill at high speed. I also took pictures of Mongolian emotional life with Purgong as a model. Most of the roads here are unpaved, so I was told to always fasten my seatbelt when I got in the car. I got in the car to experience Purgong and fastened my seatbelt, but the vibration was so strong that my head hit the roof of the car and my butt bounced off the seat. The four women in the group I rode with were so excited that they gave the driver a tip and gave him a thumbs up. I shouted, “Slowly! Slowly!” because I thought the car might roll over. When the woman next to me said, “I don’t understand Korean,” I shouted, “Slow! Slow!” The woman next to me said she was excited, and I was scared, screaming and on the verge of crying. I can endure hardships, but I’m sensitive to scary things. I remembered the time when I was driving down a winding road in Zhangjiajie and I was so scared that I kept my eyes shut. I felt a little embarrassed getting out of the car, but I thought that if I kept going like this, I’d end up in an accident and end up on the news. I think we should be especially careful when we’re abroad.

We drove to see a Mongolian traditional folk performance. They showed various traditional music and dances for an hour, wearing gorgeous costumes. The voice of the female singer sounded mysterious and strange, and the voice of one male singer had an unfamiliar tone that I’d never heard before, which was so attractive. I didn’t have much expectations, but when it was over, I gave a tip and took a picture. One person explained about Genghis Khan and Mongolian history, and the performance and dance continued. While listening to the explanation, I learned the meaning of Mongolian spots and hure (fence/father) anew. While listening to music praising Genghis Khan, he also explained in detail about the person and Mongolia. He explained about the Altai Mountains and Lake Baikal and said that he definitely recommends traveling there.

Dinner was a lamb dish called ‘Khorkhokh’, which was so rich that it reminded me of kimchi.

It is said that Mongolian nomads ate this dish when they had special guests, on family celebrations, birthdays, and holidays, and in modern times, it is a dish that anyone traveling to Mongolia must try at least once. The main ingredients are sheep or goat. They slaughter sheep or goats, remove the fat from the meat parts, cut them into bite-size pieces, and put goat meat, lamb, salt, etc. in a large pot or pan along with heated choto (stone from the Mongolian steppe). Sometimes, they also add sheep intestines, blood sausage, carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables. I have never felt uncomfortable with food while traveling, but this was not so good because of the smell.

We had a campfire in the front yard of the ger at night. At night, the temperature dropped and I envied the people wearing long padding. It was an optional tour for 10 dollars, and several people sang songs and went for about an hour. I thought they wouldn’t get paid for this, but they did. My roommate thought that guides should have this kind of income, but I was dissatisfied because I didn’t have anything else. Today, I waited until late at night and went out to see the stars, but there were so many clouds that I gave up and went to sleep. Other people waited longer, losing sleep, and showed me pictures of the stars that they saw, which I was very disappointed about. I slept well the second night in the ger.

Day 3

There was a commotion about losing my bag in the morning.

Last time I traveled, I applied for roaming, but this trip was short and I didn’t really feel the need. I didn’t use roaming and didn’t know much about Wi-Fi, so I gave up on the internet. I just took pictures with my phone. My roommate told me that I could use the internet at the restaurant, but I guess I just passed it by. After I found out and connected to the internet, all the texts from that time came pouring in like a dam had burst. After eating, I went to the bathroom and sat down at a different seat to organize the text messages I received, so I forgot the handbag I had hung on the chair while eating.

After cleaning up a bit and leaving the restaurant to go to the ger, I felt empty and oh no! My handbag containing my passport and money was gone. My mind went blank for a moment and I looked around like I was crazy. A restaurant employee came over and asked what I was looking for. I told him I didn’t have my handbag and he pointed to the bag on the counter. I picked it up at the speed of light. The ger accommodations in this national park are mostly used by Koreans, so the guidebook for the accommodations is written in Korean. Since it’s a place where many Koreans use, the employee’s language is not very good, but we were able to communicate. I told him that I didn’t take it because my roommate was Korean. It was a time when I could feel the maturity of our country’s level of consciousness. As I write this, I regret not having thanked him for even the smallest thing.

Since I had some time to spare, I walked around the meadows around the ger and took pictures with my phone. A man is holding a large camera and taking pictures diligently. Later, I had a chance to see his pictures, and they really hit home with the words I heard in my photography class, “Look at it differently.” I envied him for taking such good pictures. I said, “Please upload it to the group chat later,” and that was the end of it.

We took a bus and started easy trekking. Yamatsan (Yamaat uu), which is 2,100m above sea level and located in Terelj National Park, means “a mountain with many mountain goats.” It is an easy trekking course that is good for leisurely walking along the gentle ridge and climbing the hill. In particular, in the summer, wild flowers are in full bloom, so it is said that you can walk through a field of flowers. When you climb up the rock, you can see the beautiful scenery of Terelj National Park at a glance. When I chose a travel product, I said that trekking was a must, and it was the best experience that was a feast for the eyes. It was a leisurely trekking for about 2 hours. At the top, there was a statue of Awo and Genghis Khan. I couldn’t take enough pictures with my camera, so I took a panoramic photo. Mongolia seems to have this nature as its best product. While climbing the hill, the rocks of strangely shaped rocks and the wide open landscape looked like silk spread out, more impressive than any art made by humans. It was the best nature that made me want to sit there for a day and leisurely look at. Just seeing this was enough for the trip. There are more Mongolian tours that do not include trekking and they are cheaper, but I paid more and applied, and it was an excellent choice. The beautiful nature caught my ankles and I kept looking back, filling my heart with joy.

After traveling for about two hours, I entered Ulaanbaatar, where I first arrived. For lunch, we had grilled skewered chicken, beef, horse, and lamb. Everyone said that cucumber was the best, perhaps because they were not used to eating meat, and left a lot of meat.

Since I had just had lunch, it was difficult to climb the Victory Tower with many stairs, and I could see the entire city of Ulaanbaatar. It is a victory monument built in 1971 to commemorate Mongolia's victory in World War II. It is the highest point in Ulaanbaatar and serves as an observation deck to view the city. The front of the tower depicts a soldier holding a gun in one hand and a flag in the other, and the inner wall of the tower is engraved with a mosaic mural depicting the series of events from World War II to the establishment of the Mongolian Republic. It is a place of historical significance, and it is said that many Mongolian citizens and tourists visit to view the city or watch the sunset or night view. In every country, the history of war and invasion creates its culture and emotions. When we are in the country, we live with our experiences and history, but when we come out of the country, Mongolia is the same. They sell souvenirs and paintings, so I bought a painting.

Here in the city, there is a memorial park for the independence activist Lee Tae-jun, the Schweitzer of Mongolia. Lee Tae-jun was born in Haman, Gyeongsangnam-do in 1883, graduated from Severance Medical School, and immigrated to Mongolia in 1914. He devoted himself to treating various diseases of Mongolians. He was respected as a ‘heavenly doctor’ for his medical activities while carrying out anti-Japanese independence movements in China and Mongolia. He was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1980 and the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990. On July 19, 2001, a park commemorating Lee Tae-jun was built in Ulaanbaatar. It is currently one of the tourist attractions visited by many tourists. Although the name is unfamiliar to me, it is a precious opportunity to remember someone who sweated for the country.

I was told to be careful of pickpockets while sightseeing in the city, but since they are all Asians, it seemed difficult to tell them apart, but I really had to be careful of pickpockets in Europe.

Since it was rush hour here, traffic was even worse, so it took about 20 minutes by car, but I walked to the massage shop because they said it was about 8 minutes. Even in this large country, people flock to the city for work, so traffic is said to be very bad in Ulaanbaatar. Currently, only roads are used, but the guide explained that there is a subway construction plan and that they are discussing it with our country. Our country has done a lot of subway construction, so I think they can do it well… … . I hope it works out well. I think that the traffic here is at its limit right now. Also, since coal is used as fuel, the air is said to be bad in the winter. It is unimaginable that our country does not have a subway right now. If a subway were built here, the traffic situation would improve. I am proud of how comfortable and good our subway is.

When I went in to get a full-body massage, it seemed like all the customers here were Korean. Maybe it is because Mongolian travel is popular these days and the package courses are the same, but I think it is our country wherever I go. I don’t know how much the massage costs, but it is just so-so. Maybe it is because I do not get massages comfortably. So knowing may not be good. I've heard people say things like, "This is a minor key, that part is a musical instrument, so you can't appreciate it."

After the massage, we went to dinner. It was the best high-end restaurant food during the trip, perhaps because it was the last day. Mongolian shabu-shabu is said to have originated from the Yuan Dynasty, when people used to boil thinly sliced meat and vegetables in water to eat them easily when they ran out of flour. It is a dish where you boil broth in a pot or pan and lightly boil lamb, horse meat, beef, and other vegetables. The broth can range from something close to a soup made from lamb, beef, or chicken to a Thai curry-flavored broth. This country mainly imports vegetables and fruits, so there aren't many vegetables. We had meat for lunch, but even though it was expensive, the smell was so bad that we left the meat. The cucumber side dish was okay, so when I ate it all and asked for more, they said it would cost extra. Still, I asked for it and asked how much it was, and they said, “Eww!” One plate costs 7,000 won in our currency. I left the meat and bought cucumbers at a high price.

The last night, today’s accommodation is comfortable and 5-star. I washed and hung my underwear to dry in preparation for the trip with less luggage, and unlike the ger, there was Wi-Fi, so I organized my photos and wrote a travelogue, and time flew by without me noticing. After my last trip, I said I would never write a travelogue again because it was so hard, but I am writing one again.

Day 4

My roommate said it would be good to eat breakfast early, so when I went to the restaurant, many people were already eating. There was more variety and classy food than usual. They say that the good thing about traveling is that when the time comes, someone prepares something for you. My roommate, who calls himself a bread lover, brought plenty of bread, and I, who especially likes yogurt, brought a bowl and ate it deliciously. I eat everything except for the unique smell of lamb and horse meat.

I return to my room and pack my bags again. Last time, I was not late for my appointment, but I got on the bus last, so I started moving earlier than my appointment time. Today, the weather was good and I didn’t have any outdoor activities, so I wore the one-piece dress I had worn when I came. Time passed quickly and I was sad to leave. I stopped by the largest department store in Mongolia to buy chocolate, and a Korean who wasn’t in my group told me that there was a famous wafer snack here, so I bought that. It was a no-shopping trip, but next, I went to a cashmere store because the customers wanted it. It was a high-end product made of goat hair, and the scarf was about 70,000 to 80,000 won. There was even a fashion show for a while. One of my group members said they had received an order and picked out more than 20 scarves. My roommate also picked out a few and put one in. I didn’t even think about it because it was expensive, but I chose a small scarf. I usually buy small things as souvenirs of my trips, but after hesitating for a moment, I paid and praised myself for doing a good job.

I moved again and arrived at the airport. It was a small airport, so it wasn’t too complicated, and there was only one plane for departure, so it was spacious. I didn’t buy much, but the plastic bag I brought in from the snacks I bought earlier is gone. I didn’t put it in my carrier and it seemed to have been hung on the bus hanger, so I thought it might have fallen to the floor and told the guide. I called the driver and he said he had it and would bring it. It wasn’t expensive, but it was a precious item because I wanted to share it with my friends. Why am I like this? Just like the last handbag incident, I should have pulled myself together and taken good care of it, but it’s annoying. Still, I resolved it well and arrived at Incheon Airport safely and in good health. Since I often go to the airport, I’m relieved that my fear has lessened and I’m getting used to it. When I arrived at Incheon Airport and the Wi-Fi was available, I heard some noisy news from my parents’ house about my mother’s shift. My roommate got off the airport railroad together and I closed my eyes and went a long way, but it was past 10 o’clock when I got home. Maybe it’s because of my age, but I’m more tired than usual. Still, I parted ways with my roommate and talked about our next destination. “I can go anywhere with peace of mind if I’m with you,” he said before leaving.
