경기도교육청(교육감 임태희)이 국제바칼로레아(IB) 교육 확산과 질적 성장 지원을 위해 ‘경기 IB학교’의 체계도를 제시하고, 지난해보다 확장된 ‘5S+ 추진 전략’을 수립해 운영한다.

‘경기 IB학교’는 ‘깊이 있는 학습과 성장의 경기 IB학교를 통한 미래형 학교 문화 확산’을 비전으로 삼아, 학교와 지역의 맥락 속에서 체계적인 IB 교육을 실천하는 경기미래학교 모델.

국제 바칼로레아(IB)는 국제적으로 인정받는 유치원부터 고등학교까지의 교육과정이다. 각 과목이 약 7년 주기로 부분 개편 및 수정된다. IB교육재단(International Baccalaureate Organization, IBO)은 1968년에 창설되어 스위스 제네바에 본부를 두고 있는 국제 교육재단으로 만 3세부터 만 19세까지의 학생들을 위한 네 가지의 교육 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.

‘5S+ 추진 전략’은 △IB 학교(School)의 지속 확대 및 단계별 운영 연계, △실천정신(Spirit) 공유와 일반학교 확산, △전문 교원(Specialist) 양성 확대 및 활용, △교육 우수 사례(Success) 발굴·공유를 통한 교육공동체 동반 성장, △학교 맞춤형 지원체계(Support) 구축 및 운영 내실화로 설정해 IB 학교의 운영 지원과 확산에 힘쓴다.

경기도교육청은 이를 위해 인증 단계별 IB 학교의 교원 네트워크를 강화하고, 운영에 따른 정보 교류 기회를 확대한다. 또한 IB 전문교원을 중심으로 지원단을 구축해 평가 예시자료의 개발 보급 등 미래형 수업과 평가 실천에도 주력한다.

2025년 7월 현재 도내 IB 교육 운영학교는 총 297교(월드스쿨 9교, 후보학교 44교, 관심학교 244교)다. 경기도교육청은 올해 안에 관심학교 중 40여 학교를 후보학교로 선정하고, 후보학교 중 11교는 월드스쿨 인증을 받도록 힘써 연내 20교까지 확대 운영할 계획이다.

동두천양주교육지원청(교육장 임정모)은 2023년 ‘동두천양주 IB 교육벨트화’를 선포하고 IB 교육 내실화와 지속 가능한 확산을 위해 힘쓰고 있다. 2025년 현재 관내(동두천·양주) 초중고 12개교를 IB 학교로 지정해 ‘IB 교육벨트’의 기초를 마련했다.

동두천양주교육지원청이 추진하는 ‘IB 교육벨트’는 초중고 학교가 유기적으로 연결된 형태다. 한 학생이 초등학교 입학부터 고등학교를 졸업할 때까지 질문과 탐구 중심 수업을 꾸준히 경험할 수 있도록 마련한 플랫폼이다.

동두천양주교육지원청은 ‘IB 교육벨트’의 안정적 정착과 확산을 위해 △학교 네트워크 활성화 △운영교 예산 지원(미래교육협력지구 및 교육발전특구 연계) △IB 전문교원 중심의 지역 리더십 팀 구성 및 운영 △학교로 찾아가는 설명회 △교원 역량 강화 워크숍 등 다양한 지원을 펼치고 있다.

동두천양주교육지원청 관내 인증학교는 IB 교육철학과 실천 경험을 공유하고, 관심학교와 후보학교가 안정적으로 인증학교까지 도달할 수 있도록 멘토 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이 같은 ‘IB 교육벨트’는 동두천과 양주 지역 학생들에게 지속 가능한 미래역량 교육 기회를 제공하고 있다.

임태희 교육감은 “IB 교육은 지식을 암기하는 것이 아닌, 알고 있는 지식을 바탕으로 행동할 줄 아는 교육을 지향한다”며, “학생들에게 지식을 많이 알게 하는 것보다 지식을 활용해 깊이 생각하고 탐구하고 행동으로 실천하는 교육이 이뤄질 수 있도록 IB 교육을 추진해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.

Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Tae-hee) is presenting the systematic diagram of ‘Gyeonggi IB School’ and establishing and operating the ‘5S+ Promotion Strategy’ that is expanded from last year to support the expansion and qualitative growth of International Baccalaureate (IB) education.

‘Gyeonggi IB School’ is a model of Gyeonggi Future School that implements systematic IB education within the context of schools and regions with the vision of ‘spreading a future-oriented school culture through Gyeonggi IB School of deep learning and growth.’

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an internationally recognized curriculum from kindergarten to high school. Each subject is partially reorganized and revised approximately every seven years. The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is an international educational foundation founded in 1968 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It operates four educational programs for students aged 3 to 19.

The ‘5S+ Promotion Strategy’ is set to support and expand the operation of IB schools by setting the following goals: △Continuous expansion of IB schools and linkage of stage-by-stage operation, △Sharing of the spirit of practice (Spirit) and expansion of general schools, △Expanding and utilizing the training of specialists, △Growing together with the educational community through the discovery and sharing of educational best practices (Success), and △Establishing and improving the operation of a customized support system (Support) for schools.

To this end, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education is strengthening the teacher network of IB schools by certification stage and expanding opportunities for information exchange according to operation. In addition, it is focusing on future-oriented classes and evaluation practices such as the development and distribution of evaluation example materials by establishing a support group centered on IB specialist teachers.

As of July 2025, there are a total of 297 IB education schools in the province (9 world schools, 44 candidate schools, and 244 interested schools).
