안양에서 발생한 독립운동과 안양을 기반으로 활동한 독립운동가를 기리는 기념사업이 본격적으로 추진될 전망이다. 안양독립운동기념사업회는 지난 1월 28일 안양시의회 소회의실에서 창립총회를 열고 공식 출범을 알렸다.

이날 창립총회에는 지역 독립운동사 정리와 선양 사업의 필요성에 공감해 온 시민사회 및 관련 단체 인사들이 참석했다. 창립준비위원으로 참여한 김호동 광복회 경기도지부장은 “2023년 8월 광복회 안양시지회가 주최한 안양시 독립운동사 발간기념 학술토론회에서 안양 출신 또는 안양에서 활동한 독립지사에 대한 역사적 조명과 제도적 선양의 필요성이 다수 제기됐다”고 설명했다. 이어 “이를 계기로 김도현 안양시의원이 항일독립운동 기념사업 지원 조례를 제정하면서 지역 독립운동가 발굴과 서훈 지원, 기념사업, 교육·학술 연구를 추진할 수 있는 제도적 기반이 마련됐다”고 밝혔다.

이후 시민사회에서는 원태우, 엄항섭, 이재천, 이재현, 김국주 지사 등 현재까지 확인된 지역 독립지사 21명을 체계적으로 기록하고 선양하기 위한 전담 조직의 필요성에 공감대가 형성됐으며, 지난해 11월 창립준비위원회가 구성됐다.

이날 총회에서는 임정조 전 민주평화통일자문회의 안양시협의회장이 이사장으로 선출됐으며, 부이사장에는 국상표 안양시 공익활동촉진위원장과 박경애 민주평통 안양시협의회장이 이름을 올렸다. 이사에는 최병렬 안양지역도시기록연구소 대표, 김호동 광복회 경기도지부장, 문경식 난치병아동돕기운동본부 대표, 이종태 건신대학원대학교 석좌교수, 이창식 안양시보훈단체협의회 후원회장, 이평화 광복회 안양지회장, 장지섭 안양문인협회 부지부장, 김도현 안양시의원 등이 선임됐다. 감사는 김수섭 변호사가 맡았다.

임정조 이사장은 “안양독립운동기념사업회가 안양의 자랑스러운 독립운동사를 기억하고 기록하는 데 앞장설 것”이라며 “지역 독립운동의 정신과 가치를 시민과 함께 계승하고, 올바른 역사 인식 확립과 민족정기 선양에 기여할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
