Gyeonggi Province Expands ‘Blue Carbon’ Ecosystems in Hwaseong and Ansan Tidal Flats... Accelerating Carbon Neutrality 1,000㎡ of Salt-tolerant Plants Established in Baekmiri, Hwaseong and Seonamdo, Ansan... Total Expanded to 2,200㎡
The Gyeonggi Institute of Marine and Fisheries Resources is expanding coastal carbon sinks by promoting the ‘Blue Carbon Ecosystem Restoration Project’ in the tidal flats of Baekmiri, Hwaseong, and Seonamdo, Ansan, to respond to the climate crisis. Blue carbon refers to an ecosystem where seagrasses and salt-tolerant plants in tidal flats absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and store it for long periods; it has recently garnered attention as a key measure for achieving carbon neutrality.
Following the establishment of a 1,244㎡ ecosystem in Baekmiri and Seonamdo last year, the Institute plans to create an additional 1,000㎡ in two phases on April 30 and May 28 of this year. Upon completion of this project, the total size of the blue carbon ecosystem within Gyeonggi Province will increase to 2,200㎡. The primary targets of this restoration project are four species of halophytes that thrive in saline soil: Artemisia princeps, Plantago maritima, Suaeda japonica, and Salicornia europaea. These plants are known for their strong survival capabilities even in harsh tidal flat environments and their excellent carbon storage effects.
In addition, the institute is conducting a parallel survey of seagrass habitats, which serve as a representative carbon sink in marine ecosystems. Since seagrass not only possesses exceptional carbon storage capabilities but also acts as an indicator species for ecosystem health, the institute plans to establish a comprehensive carbon absorption foundation by linking these efforts.
Kim Seong-gon, Director of the Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Marine and Fisheries Resources, stated that the institute plans to thoroughly examine the calculation of carbon absorption amounts and the potential for policy utilization through this project. Gyeonggi Province intends to continue its blue carbon expansion projects to restore coastal ecosystems and achieve carbon neutrality.
