Re-reading Hongam Na Cheol, the Giant Who Illuminated the Darkness of the Era

Book Review of Hongam Na Cheol, Awakening Modernity

Narratives explaining modern Korea are generally divided into two branches. One is the history of political and military resistance against foreign aggression, and the other is the process of adopting modern institutions and ideologies. However, there is a layer between these two streams that has often been overlooked: the issue of the "awakening of identity." *Hongam Na Cheol, Awakening Modernity* is a groundbreaking work that directly addresses this gap, repositioning Na Cheol not merely as an anti-Japanese activist, but as a "turning point in the history of modern thought."

The first thing this book brings to mind is Na Cheol's status in the history of thought. In existing historical narratives, Na Cheol has generally been remembered as a symbolic leader of the Daejonggyo restoration and the independence movement. However, the author criticizes such evaluations, arguing that they remain within a "reduced understanding centered on his actions." The core of Na Cheol lay in his thought before his actions. His ideological starting point was the attempt to create a rift in the Sinocentric order that had persisted since the late Joseon Dynasty—specifically, the heteronomous perception of civilization represented by "Gija Joseon"—and to restore an indigenous identity centered on Dangun.

In this respect, Na Cheol is not merely a religious leader, but rather closer to a "revolutionary in perception" who shifted the course of Korean intellectual history. His declaration of "Gukmangdojon" (The Way Remains Even in the Perish of the Nation) emphasizes the continuity of the spirit that transcends the destruction of the state, while finding the basis of the independence movement not in physical recovery, but in the "reconstruction of the spirit." This is a line of thought that expands the independence movement from a mere political struggle into a civilizational and ontological resistance. Consequently, Na Cheol is established not merely as a figure in the history of the independence movement, but as the figure who presented the "philosophical foundation" of that movement.

This re-evaluation holds even greater significance today. In an era where the global order and cultural hybridity have deepened, "identity" is once again emerging as a key topic. However, this identity is a complex challenge that can neither revert to the closed nationalism of the past nor be dismantled into uncritical universalism. Na Chul's thought guards against both extremes simultaneously. He sought a "subjective modernity" that neither absolutizes tradition nor is subordinate to foreign ideologies.

In particular, Na Chul's theories of Gukhak and Korean philosophy, which this book emphasizes, are directly linked to this critical perspective. Gukhak is presented not merely as a discipline of study but as a "system of self-awareness," while Korean philosophy is presented not as a variation of Western philosophy but as a system of thought possessing its own unique framework of ontology, epistemology, and axiology. This also serves as a challenge demanding depth of thought, moving beyond the "substanceless superficial confidence" raised alongside the spread of K-culture today.

Another virtue of this book is its persistent accumulation of materials and interpretation, befitting its massive volume (a monumental work exceeding 900 pages). Author Kim Dong-hwan does not merely list Na Cheol’s life chronologically, but systematizes his thought into categories such as modern identity, Korean studies, Korean philosophy, and the theory of practice. In particular, the commentary on *Junggwangga* included as an appendix holds high academic value as an attempt to reconstruct the narrative and literary structure of Na Cheol’s thought, going beyond a simple introduction of the text. Considering that there has been no comprehensive commentary since liberation, this can be regarded as a unique achievement of this book.

However, as this book possesses a clear critical perspective, it demands a certain tension from the reader. The narrative, which reconstructs Na Cheol as the "figure who awakened modernity," is persuasive yet simultaneously carries a strong normative viewpoint. Depending on the reader, this may feel as narrowing the scope of interpretation. Yet, this very tension makes the book a living text, as interpretations surrounding the history of thought are inherently bound to be controversial.

Ultimately, *Hongam Na Cheol, Awakening Modernity* is not a biography of a single individual. It is a challenging answer to the question, "How should we understand modern Korea?" Through Na Cheol, the author aims to convey not the restoration of the past, but the reconstruction of thought for the future.

In an era that questions modernity anew, this book poses questions that are undoubtedly uncomfortable but necessary. And at the center of those questions, it re-establishes a forgotten name. Na Cheol—he remains a figure of the present.
