의왕시가 생태환경 보전과 시민 참여를 기반으로 한 ESG 행정 성과를 인정받으며 전국 최고 수준의 지속가능 도시로 평가받았다.

의왕시는 23일 서울 여의도 FKI타워에서 열린 「2026 제7회 ESG 코리아 어워즈」에서 지방자치단체 부문 대상을 수상했다고 밝혔다.

‘ESG 코리아 어워즈’는 한스경제와 ESG행복경제연구소가 공동 주최하는 행사로, 전국의 우수 ESG 행정 사례를 발굴하고 지속가능한 지역 발전 방향을 제시하기 위해 마련됐다.

이번 수상에서 의왕시는 ▲환경정책 ▲지역안전 ▲주민 소통 및 참여 등 전반적인 ESG 행정 성과를 높이 평가받았다.

특히 왕송호수 일대를 중심으로 한 생태관광 정책이 대표 성과로 꼽힌다. 시는 수변 생태환경을 최대한 보전하면서 캠핑장, 레일바이크, 스카이레일 등을 조성해 자연과 관광이 공존하는 ‘체류형 생태관광지’로 발전시켜 왔다.

또한 현대로템, 한국환경보전원 등과 협력해 도시화로 훼손된 포일 습지의 생태 복원을 성공적으로 추진하며 지역 생태계 회복과 생물다양성 증진에도 기여했다.

탄소중립 정책 역시 체계적으로 추진되고 있다. 시는 ‘탄소중립·녹색성장 기본계획’을 수립하고 2050년 탄소중립 실현을 목표로 ▲저탄소 차량 보급 ▲녹지공간 확대 ▲녹색건축물 설계기준 적용 등 43개 세부 사업을 추진 중이다.

이와 함께 시민 참여형 정책도 눈에 띈다. 매월 운영되는 ‘두발로 데이’ 걷기 캠페인을 비롯해 다양한 친환경 실천 운동을 통해 시민이 직접 참여하는 ESG 문화 확산에 힘쓰고 있다.

김성제 시장은 “이번 수상은 시민과 함께 추진해 온 ESG 정책의 성과를 인정받은 결과”라며 “앞으로도 환경 보전과 사회적 가치 실현, 투명한 행정을 기반으로 시민이 체감할 수 있는 지속가능한 도시 발전을 이어가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Uiwang City announced on the 23rd that it won the Grand Prize in the Local Government category at the "2026 7th ESG Korea Awards," held at the FKI Tower in Yeouido, Seoul.
