Gunpo City to Operate Smart Bottled Water Vending Machine ‘NEW Gunpo Ice Tag’

Installed at 3 Locations Including Rodeo Street and Central Park for 60 Days Starting July 1

Introduction of Phone Authentication… Enhancing Fairness with ‘One Bottle Per Person, One Bottle Per Day’ Limit

Gunpo City announced that it will begin operating the smart bottled water vending machine ‘NEW Gunpo Ice Tag’ starting July 1 to prevent heat-related illnesses caused by summer heatwaves and to protect citizens' health.

‘Gunpo Ice Tag’ was first operated last year in the form of an unmanned smart refrigerator and received a positive response from citizens. This year, reflecting suggestions for improvement raised during usage, a smart vending machine based on phone authentication has been introduced, and the operating period has been extended from the existing 30 days to 60 days (July 1 to August 29).

The most significant change is the introduction of a phone authentication system. When a user calls the number displayed on the vending machine, the caller ID is automatically authenticated, and one bottle of water is dispensed after verifying the last four digits of the mobile phone number. Through this measure, the "one bottle per person, one bottle per day" principle is applied to prevent duplicate receipts and ensure fairer access for citizens. Collected phone numbers will be used solely to prevent misuse and for satisfaction surveys, and will be destroyed after the project concludes.

The vending machines will be installed in three locations: next to the elevator on Sanbon Rodeo Street, next to the pavilion at the Central Park sports field, and opposite the restrooms at Dangjeong Neighborhood Park, and will operate 24 hours a day. A total of 72,000 bottles of 500ml label-free bottled water will be supplied. The plan is to manage inventory using a smart monitoring system and replenish the water twice daily.

This project is being implemented with 400 million won secured from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's special grant, of which approximately 54.71 million won will be invested in operating the smart bottled water vending machines during the summer.

In the second half of the year, Gunpo City plans to utilize the remaining budget to introduce integrated smart vending machines that provide both bottled water and hand warmers, thereby expanding seasonal disaster response services. A Gunpo City official stated, “We will continue to expand life-oriented disaster response services that citizens can tangibly experience in response to climate crises such as heatwaves and cold waves.”
