Professor Nuri Kim insists on the abolition of college entrance exams, ranks, and tuition fees

Kang Deuk-gu, member of the National Assembly, co-hosted World Without Worrying about Private Education, emphasized the lecture at the National Assembly’s ‘Open Forum’

Kim Nuri, a professor at Chung-Ang University, argued that “university entrance exams should be abolished, qualification examinations should be abolished, university rankings should be abolished and leveled, and college tuition should be abolished to provide free education.”

Professor Kim made this claim during a lecture at the National Assembly Open Forum held by Rep. Kang Deuk-gu (Debuojoo Party, Anyang Manan), a member of the Education Committee of the National Assembly, together with World Without Worrying about Private Education. On the morning of November 30th, Rep. Kang Deuk-gu held an open forum in the National Assembly to alleviate the pain of competition education under the theme of “Korea, decision to part with competition education” in the first subcommittee of the National Assembly.

The first lecture of the forum was given by Shim Yong-hwan, a historian (director of History N Education Research Institute, adjunct professor at Sungkonghoe University) on the theme of “How did the Korean school system encourage competitive education?” Director Sim Yong-hwan mentioned education policies from then to the present, focusing on the May 31st Education Reform Plan during the Kim Young-sam regime in 1995, and emphasized various trials and errors and policy failures. Furthermore, it is impossible to alleviate competition in the entrance exam with the existing reform method that has been promoted since the 5·31 education reform, and the competitive education that emphasizes aptitude and creativity has reached results that are no different from the existing entrance exam, and has failed in qualitative change, so a new approach is needed. stressed the need

The second lecture was given by Nuri Kim, Professor of German Language and Literature at Chung-Ang University, under the theme of “The Society of Empathy and Solidarity Demolished by Competitive Education.” Professor Nuri Kim pointed out that modern society is a society in which social solidarity and compassion for the weak have completely disappeared, and argued that a solution to Korean education should be sought through comparison with overseas parliaments. He further suggested that the university entrance examination, university ranking system, and college tuition problems should be resolved, and emphasized the need for a new educational paradigm shift according to the needs of the times.

In the conversation with the lecturer that followed, Cho Seong-sil, current affairs critic (former co-representative of Political Mothers), served as moderator. Kang Deuk-gu, a member of the National Assembly, Lee Hyun-woo, a student in the Department of Education, and Hong Min-jung, co-representative of World Without Worrying about Private Education, participated as panelists.

Lee Hyun-woo, a student from the Department of Education, mentioned specific cases of academic stress and pain caused by competitive education as a student, and pointed out the current reality that 'school' has become a space that makes school members tremble with anxiety and fear. .

Hong Min-jeong, co-representative of World Without Worries about Private Education, said that she had recently filed a constitutional petition seeking confirmation of the unconstitutionality of the relative evaluation of college entrance exams. She raises an alarm against this competitive education that violates students' right to pursue happiness, right to education, right to sleep, right to health, right to leisure, and even the right to life. emphasized the purpose.

Lastly, Rep. Kang Deuk-gu said, “I have a heavy sense of responsibility to resolve the pain of competitive education deeply rooted in our society.” is in preparation,” he said.

After the talk, a floor discussion was held in which opinions were expressed through various Q&A sessions with the audience.
