독자 여러분 덕분에 본지가 어느덧 창간 16주년을 맞이하게 됐습니다. 창간 16주년을 맞이할 수 있도록 본지를 구독해주시고 사랑해주신 독자 여러분께 감사의 인사와 함께 앞으로 더욱 열심히 하겠다는 몇 가지 다짐을 밝힙니다.
제22대 총선이 정확히 일주일 앞으로 다가와 있습니다. 본지는 올해 신년사에서 총선 국면에서 안양 군포 의왕 과천 지역의 후보자들의 면면을 있는 그대로 소개해 안양 군포 의왕 과천 시민들이 자신의 대리인을 선정하는데 도움을 주기 위한 총선 관련 보도의 원칙으로 공정, 정치적 중립, 유권자 중심의 관점 유지라고 밝히고 이러한 원칙에 근거해 정치적 중립을 유지하며 공정하게 보도해 왔습니다. 열심히 노력하신 각 당의 후보 여러분에게 좋은 성과 있기를 기원드립니다.
창간 16주년과 더불어 독자 여러분이 축하해주셔야 할 일이 한 가지 더 있습니다. 올해 11월이면 주간현대신문 지령 500호 특집호를 발행하게 됩니다. 본지는 지난 2월 13일 발행된 483호에서 한윤희 안양시주민자치협의회장의 와이드 인터뷰를 게재한 것을 시작으로 ‘주민자치’를 지령 500호 특집 주제의 하나로 잡아 심층보도를 하고 있습니다.
군포시는 현재 전 동에서 주민자치회를 운영하고 있고, 안양시는 31개 동 중에서 만안구에 안양1동, 동안구에 귀인동이 주민자치회를 시범 운영하고 있습니다. 의왕시는 6개동 중 오전동과 내손2동, 내손 1동이 주민자치회를 시범운영하고 있습니다. 과천시는 2020년 11월 ‘주민자치회 및 주민자치센터 설립 조례안’을 시장이 발의해 의회에 제출했으나 ‘보류’돼 주민자치회가 운영되지 않고 있습니다.
흔히들 주민자치를 풀뿌리 민주주의의 기초라고 말하고 있습니다. 본지는 올 한 해 풀뿌리 민주주의의 기초인 주민자치 발전을 위해 안양 군포 의왕 과천 4개 시의 상이한 주민자치회 발전 과정을 추적하는 한편, 경기도는 물론 전국의 주민자치 현황을 탐구하고 주민자치의 미래 전망을 제시함으로써 풀뿌리 민주주의의 발전에 기여하고자 합니다.
인터넷신문인 경기브레이크뉴스는 논외로 하고, 종이신문인 주간현대신문은 안양 군포 의왕 과천 지역의 신문입니다. 본지와 같은 특정 지역의 신문은 중앙지와 달리 지역 주민들의 삶, 지역경제와 밀접한 연관을 가질 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 본지의 여러 여건상, 특히 기자의 부족으로 지역 밑바닥의 정서를 반영하는 보도는 부족했던 것이 사실입니다. 다행히 지난해부터 시민기자 10여 명이 활동을 하고 있습니다. 올해는 시민기자들과 함께 지역민의 삶의 애환을 반영한 고발 기사 등 지역 밀착형 기사를 담아내기 위해 더욱 노력하겠습니다. 독자 여러분의 제보와 성원도 함께하길 기대합니다.
모든 언론은 독자가 없으면 존재하지 못합니다. 아무리 좋은 기사라도 읽어주는 독자, 보아주는 청취자가 없다면 아무 의미가 없기 때문입니다. 본지는 올해 지령 500호를 기념해 본지의 존재 가치를 더욱 높이기 위한 독자배가운동을 전개하고자 합니다. 독자 여러분의 적극적인 동참을 부탁드립니다.
주간현대신문/경기브레이크뉴스는 지금까지도 그래왔던 것처럼 우리 사회의 소외된 이웃들이 좀 더 따뜻하게 살 수 있는 사회가 될 수 있도록, 우리 사회가 좀 더 정의로운 사회가 될 수 있도록 앞으로도 최선을 다하겠습니다.

주간현대신문·경기브레이크뉴스가 그동안 안양 군포 의왕 과천 지역에서 선거가 있을 때는 유권자들의 올바른 선택을 위한 정보를 제공하는 것과 함께 생활밀착형 정보를 지역민들에게 제공하기 위해 노력해왔다고 자부합니다.
본지는 그동안 지역의 경제·사회·문화·교육 발전을 추구하는 데 앞장서왔고, 안양·군포·의왕·과천 지역 거주민의 입장을 대변하고, 사회적 약자의 보호와 지원을 위해 노력함으로써 지역의 발전과 통합에 기여해왔습니다.

한 일도 많지 않습니다만 제가 주간현대신문·경기브레이크뉴스 자문위원장을 10년을 맡아하는 이유는 딱 한 가지 ‘이여춘 발행인이 정도를 걷는 사람’이라는 믿음 때문입니다.
한 사회가 건강하고 바르게 나아가기 위해서는 언론의 제대로 된 역할이 중요합니다. 언론이 거울처럼 사회 곳곳을 비춰 빛과 그늘을 있는 그대로 보여 줘야합니다. 언론보도의 균형이 무너지면 사회의 균형도 무너지게 됩니다.
지난 16년 간 특유의 개척 정신과 창조력을 바탕으로 지역 언론으로서의 사명을 다하고자 노력해온 이여춘 발행인에게 감사의 박수를 보냅니다. 앞으로도 지역 사회의 정의를 지키는 파수꾼이자 문화 다양성과 잠재력을 널리 알리는 장으로 늘 시민들 곁에 함께해 주시기를 바랍니다.

Thanks to our readers, this magazine has already celebrated its 16th anniversary. To help us celebrate our 16th anniversary, we would like to express our gratitude to our readers who have subscribed and loved this magazine, as well as a few promises to work harder in the future.
The 22nd general election is exactly one week away. In this year's New Year's address, this paper introduces the faces of the candidates in the Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon regions as they are in the general election phase, and adheres to the principles of fairness, political neutrality, and voter-centered reporting on the general election to help the citizens of Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon select their representatives. We maintain political neutrality and report fairly based on these principles. I wish good success to the candidates of each party who worked hard.
In addition to our 16th anniversary, there is one more thing for our readers to celebrate. In November of this year, the 500th special issue of the Weekly Hyundai Newspaper will be published. Starting with the wide interview with Anyang City Residents' Autonomy Council Chairman Han Yoon-hee in issue 483 published on February 13th, this magazine has been providing in-depth reporting on ‘resident autonomy’ as one of the special topics of Directive No. 500.
Gunpo City is currently operating resident autonomous associations in all dongs, and Anyang City is pilot operating resident autonomous associations in Anyang 1-dong in Manan-gu and Gwiin-dong in Dongan-gu among its 31 dongs. Among the six wards in Uiwang City, Ojeon-dong, Naeson 2-dong, and Naeson 1-dong are piloting resident autonomy associations. In Gwacheon City, the ‘Ordinance for the Establishment of Residents’ Autonomy Association and Community Center’ was proposed by the mayor and submitted to the council in November 2020, but it was ‘shelved’ and the residents’ association is not operating.
It is often said that resident autonomy is the foundation of grassroots democracy. This year, in order to develop resident autonomy, which is the basis of grassroots democracy, this paper traces the development process of different resident autonomous associations in the four cities of Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon, while exploring the current status of resident autonomy not only in Gyeonggi-do but also across the country and predicting the future prospects for resident autonomy. For a society to move forward in a healthy and upright manner, the proper role of the media is important. The media must shine into every corner of society like a mirror, showing light and shade as they really are. If the balance of media coverage is lost, the balance of society will also be lost.
