1960대는 면 소재지 내에 대체로 초등학교가 하나씩 있었다. 학생들은 어린 나이에도 보통 사방 4km 거리에서 비포장도로를 걸어서 학교를 다녔다.
경기 평택군 포승읍 내기리에 1929년도에 설립된 내기초등학교도 그런 학교 중 하나였다. 내기초등학교는 그 당시 시골에서도 외지의 바다를 끼고 있는 지방의 구석진 시골에 있어서 매년 소풍을 지금의 평택항이 생긴 곳인 만호리로 갔다.
검정고무신 신고 4~5 km를 걸어다녔던 코흘리개 친구들이 벌써 내년이면 칠순을 맞이하게 되었다. 6학년 60명씩 3개반 졸업. 그후 읍내로 중학교 진학과 서울의 공단 등으로 취업을 떠난 친구들이 모두 모여서 동창회를 결성하여 옛 추억을 그리며 코흘리개 시절을 상기하며 일 년에 4회씩 만나기로 했다.
건강과 노후를 걱정하는 나이가 됐지만 지난 3월 24일(일) 일부는 내기에서 출발에서 안양의 본인 사무실에서 합류해 내기초등 시니어 34명이 한탄강 주상절리와 소이산 전망대로 봄소풍을 떠났다.
친구들은 옛날 전기도 없던 시절 등잔불 밑에서 숙제하던 얘기며, 등하교길 남의집 당근밭 참외밭 서리하며 배고팠던 시절을 떠올리며 옛 추억 여행에 모두들 수다삼매경에 빠져 든다.

2021년 개장해 트레킹 명소로 사랑받는 철원한탄강주상절리길은 해외 명소 부럽지 않은 짜릿함을 갖춘 국내에서 만날 수 있는 비경이다. 유네스코가 인증한 한탄강지질공원에 조성된 길로 순담매표소와 드르니매표소에서 출입이 가능하며, 총 길이 3.6km에 이른다. 협곡을 따라 이어지는 잔도를 거닐며 화산활동이 만든 한탄강 일대의 독특한 지형을 감상한다. 굳이 큰돈과 시간을 들여 중국 장가계(张家界) 잔도(높은 절벽에 낸 길)나 스위스 피르스트 클리프 워크까지 갈 필요가 없다고 느낄 정도다.
한탄강은 화산 폭발로 형성된 화산 강이다. 이 일대는 원래 기반암이 화강암인데 화산이 폭발하면서 현무암질 용암이 뒤덮었고, 한탄강의 침식작용으로 ‘U자형’ 협곡이 형성됐다. 수직 절벽과 주상절리의 비경이 펼쳐지는 협곡에 철원한탄강주상절리길이 문을 열면서 이 아름다운 풍광을 누구나 눈에 담을 수 있게 됐다.
잔도를 걷는 내내 상공에서 협곡을 감상한다는 점, 스릴감이 넘친다는 점도 인기 포인트다. 지상 수십 미터 높이에서 바라보는 주상절리는 올려다볼 때와 느낌이 확연히 다르다. 게다가 잔도는 격자형 철재로 만들어, 시선을 아래로 돌리면 바닥까지 훤히 보인다. 풍경과 아슬아슬한 재미를 만끽할 수 있다.
소이산은 해발 362m의 아담한 산이지만 주변에 가로 막는 장애물이 없어서 철원평야는 물론 멀리 DMZ까지 조망할 수 있다. 지난 2022년 여름 첫 운행을 시작한 소이산 모노레일을 이용해 남녀노소 누구나 손쉽게 오를 수 있어 더 흥미롭다.
모노레일이 출발하는 철원역사문화공원은 1930년대 철원의 시가지 모습을 재현해 놓은 공간으로 기차역, 극장, 여관, 우체국, 소방서, 약국, 학교 등 다양한 건물이 모여 있어 마치 타임머신을 타고 시간여행을 떠나는 기분이다. 주말이면 여행객을 대상으로 다양한 행사와 상설공연이 마련되어 볼거리를 더한다.
모노레일은 한 대에 8명씩 탑승할 수 있고, 현재 4대가 움직이고 있다. 7~8분 정도 기다리면 다음 열차가 도착하는데 주말에는 탑승자가 많아 대기 시간이 길어지기도 한다. 소이산 상부 승강장에 도착하면 지그재그로 된 길을 따라 정상으로 이동하면 된다. 정상 바로 아래는 소이산을 지키던 국군이 사용하던 벙커와 과거 미군이 썼던 막사가 남아있다. 이 땅에 진정한 평화와 화해를 바라는 조형물에 자꾸만 눈이 간다.
모처럼의 소풍에 많은 음식과 떡을 준비해온 친구들, 준비해온 떡을 맛있게 먹어주는 시니어들 모두 마냥 즐거운 표정이다.
지금의 평택은 천지개벽으로 도시가 돼 버려 가끔 고향에 가보면 옛날 인심 후하던 정서가 없는 것 같아 낯설기까지 하다.
그래도 우리에게 남은 마지막 마음의 고향, 내기초등학교! 내기초등학교를 같이 다닌 소꿉동무들!
모처럼의 소풍으로 마음은 60년 전으로 돌아가 어릴 때 평택항으로 소풍가는 날처럼 들뜬다.
이구동성으로 “더 늙기 전에 자주보자”는 친구들의 소망과 함께 그 옛날 평택 깡촌 출신들의 소풍은 날 저무는 줄 모르고 계속된다.
늙어가는 옛 동무들의 활력소 역할을 한 것 같아 모임을 주선한 나 자신도 마음이 뿌듯해진다.
함께해서 즐겁고, 또 만날 날을 기대할 수 있으니 마음이 따스해지는 행복한 봄날 소풍 길.
