도서관이 눈에 들어오자 내 안에 상식이 깨지는 느낌이 들었다.

건축가는 참 제앙스러운(‘말썽’의 전라도 방언) 사람인가 보다. 도서관을 보며 맨 먼저 그런 생각이 들었다. 며느리가 책을 좋아하는 나에게 구경시켜주고 싶다며 별마당도서관에 데리고 갔다. 도서관은 수원 화서역에서 가까운 스타필드 매장 건물 6층에 있다.

건물 중앙이 뻥 뚫려 있어 로비에서 고층까지의 풍경이 그야말로 환상적이었다. 6층에서 시작된 도서관은 계단을 통해 올라가는 모든 벽면이 온통 책으로 장식되어 있다. 이곳은 쉼과 만남, 그리고 책으로 소통하는 열린 문화 공간으로 꾸며져 있었다. 멋진 풍경을 보면 저절로 핸드폰에 담는다. 우리나라에 이런 곳이 있다니 어깨가 으쓱해진다. 외국인들도 핸드폰을 들고 포즈를 취하며 즐거워한다. 가까운 곳에 산다면 자주 이용하고 싶다. 입을 다물지 못하는 나를 보며 며느리는 “어머니가 좋아하실 줄 알았어요” 하며 만족스런 웃음을 짓는다.

언젠가 사진공부를 할 때 “다르게 보라”는 강사의 말이 가장 인상적이었고 기억에 남는다. 쇼핑몰에 이런 멋진 작품 같은 도서관을 만든다는 발상이 그런 게 아닌가 싶다. 경상도 시골 어느 한적한 곳에 도서관이 있다. 그곳에 도서관을 짓는다고 했을 때 누가 거기까지 찾아 가겠느냐고 모두 의아해 했다고 한다. 기존 도서관의 틀을 벗어난 획기적인 경영으로 지금은 먼 곳에서도 와서 이용하는 사람이 많은 유명한 곳이 되었다.
