국제라이온스354-B지구 방문단 21명이 자매지구인 국제라이온스306-B1(스리랑카)을 지난 1월 17일부터 1월 24일까지 6박 8일 간 방문했다. 방문단은 캘라니아대학 한국어과를 방문해 장학금 3,000달러를 6명에게 수여하고, 학교 측과 향후 지속적으로 장학금을 지급하기로 약속했다.

국제라이온스354-B지구 심현섭 총재 부부, 조성현 제1부총재, 김봉식 전 총재, 노철호 사무총장, 강석정 재무총장, 김문학 자문위원 부부, 김초원 7지역 제1지대 위원장 등 21명으로 꾸려진 방문단은 스리랑카를 공식 방문해 봉사활동을 마치고 지난 1월 24일 귀국했다.

방문단은 2일차에 코리아 빌리지를 방문해 발전기금 1,000달러와 100만원 상당의 학용품을 기부했다. 2004년 12월 26일 인도네시아 수마트라 인근해역에서 진도 9의 지진이 발생하여 그 여파로 대규모 쓰나미가 발생했고 스리랑카까지 큰 피해를 입었다. 국제라이온스354-B지구는 스리랑카 지진 피해 복구사업의 일환으로 2004년부터 2006년까지 32만5,000 달러를 기부해 주택 65채를 지어줬다. 국제라이온스354-B지구가 스리랑카에 건설한 주택단지는 ‘코리아 빌리지’로 명명됐다. 국제라이온스354-B지구는 매년 코리아빌리지를 방문해서 유지보수비로 1,000 달러를 기부하고 어린이들에게 100만원 상당의 학용품을 지원하고 있다.

방문단은 3일차에 캘라니아대학 한국어과를 방문해 장학금 3,000달러를 6명에게 수여하고 노트북 13대를 기증했다.

4일차에는 국제라이온스클럽 306-B1지구 MJF나이트(멜빈존스)행사에 참석해 2,000달러를 기부했다.

5일차에는 역사탐방으로 스리랑카를 지배했던 고대 왕조의 도시, 하늘에 떠있는 성, 시기리야산성을 탐방했다. 시기리야산성은 5세기 경 싱할라왕조의 왕 카샤파 1세가 건설했다. 시기리야란 ‘사자 바위’란 뜻이다. 시기리야산성은 광활한 밀림 평원 속에 갑자기 우뚝 솟은 거대한 바위 위에 지은 성으로 해발 370미터밖에 되지 않지만 사방이 낭떠러지이고, 주변에 아무런 높은 봉우리가 없어 그야말로 전망대 같은 하늘에 떠있는 낙공불락의 왕궁이었다.

이번에 스리랑카를 방문하고 돌아온 국제라이온스354-B지구 조성현 제1부총재는 “올해 처음으로 캘라니아대학 한국어과를 방문해 6명의 학생에게 1인당 500달러씩 생활비로 장학금 3,000달러를 수여했다. 학생들은 보통 통학거리 4-5시간 걸리는 곳에 거주해 장학금을 주니 ‘1년 동안 자취하면서 공부할 수 있게 됐다’고 고마워했다”며, “앞으로 매년 6명에게 최소 4년은 지속적으로 장학금을 지원할 계획을 세우고 온 것이 아주 보람이 있었다”고 말했다.

국제라이온스354-B지구 2023-2024 회기 심현섭 총재는 특별프로그램으로 트리플 크라운상을 제정했고, △클럽회원 순 증가, △지구 발전기금 전 회원 6만원 납부, △LCIF기금 클럽 전회원 100달러 100% 달성을 활동 목표로 하고 있다.

A delegation of 21 members from Lions International District 354-B visited our sister district, Lions International 306-B1 (Sri Lanka), for 8 days and 6 nights from January 17th to January 24th. The visiting team visited the Korean Language Department at Calania University and awarded $3,000 in scholarships to six students, and promised to continue providing scholarships in the future with the school.

The 21-member visiting team, including Lions International District 354-B President Hyun-seop Shim and his wife, First Vice President Cho Sung-hyeon, former President Bong-sik Kim, Secretary-General Cheol-ho Noh, Treasurer Seok-jeong Kang, Advisory Councilor Moon-hak Kim and his wife, and Cho-won Kim, Region 7 1st Zone Chairperson, made an official visit to Sri Lanka. After completing my volunteer work, I returned home on January 24th.

The visiting group visited Korea Village on the second day and donated $1,000 in development funds and 1 million won worth of school supplies.
