인간 본성은 선한 천사일까, 악한 악마일까? 이 둘 사이 어디에 인간은 서 있을까? 오랜 세월 동안 괴롭혀온 개인적인 질문이었다. 우연히 ‘우리 본성의 선한 천사’란 책을 알게 되었다. 당장 책을 주문해 읽기 시작했다. 1,406페이지나 되는 책을 읽기는 처음이었다. 그래, 인간 본성을 다루는 책이니 이 정도 두께도 부족하지 않을까? 이 책은 폭력에 대한 이해로 시작해서 선한 인간이 되어가는 과정을 보여준다.

집단 살해의 역사

제목만 봐도 으스스하다. 그러나 인간은 이런 집단 살해의 위험을 겪으며 살아남아 번성했다. 사실(事實, fact)를 아는 것이 가장 객관적이다. 첫 번째 변화는 5,000 년 전 채집과 수렵에서 최초의 농업 문명으로 전이한 시기에 발생한 변화로, 폭력적 사망 비율이 이전에 비해 1/5로 줄어든다. 역사가는 이를 평화화 과정(Pacificarion Process)이라 칭한다.

두 번째 변화는 500여 년에 걸쳐 일어난다. 유럽에서 중세 후기부터 20세기까지로 살인율이 1/10로 줄어든다. 조각조각 나뉜 봉건 영토가 중앙권력화하면서 상업 하부 구조를 갖춘 큰 왕국으로 통합된 시기다. 이 경향성은 문명화 과정(Civilizing Process)이라 한다.

세 번째 변화는 17세기와 18세기 이성의 시대로 계몽주의가 인간의 정신에 영향을 끼친다. 당연했던 전제 정치, 노예제, 결투, 사법적 고문, 미신적 살해, 가학적 처벌, 동물에 대한 잔학 행위들을 철폐하려는 조직적 움직임이 처음 등장한다. 체계적인 평화주의도 이때 움트는데 이를 인도주의 혁명(Humanitarian Revolution)이라 부른다

네 번째 주요 변화는 2차 세계대전이 끝난 후 50~60년 동안 강대국들과 대부분의 선진국들이 큰 전쟁을 벌이지 않은 시기다. 이 시기를 긴 평화(Long Peace)라 부른다. 다섯 번째 경향성은 1989년 냉전이 끝난 이래 내전, 집단 살해, 독재 정부의 억압과 테러가 세계적으로 감소한 사실이다. 전쟁 같은 큰 규모가 작은 차원으로 달라진다. 이를 새로운 평화(New Peace)로 부른다. 마지막으로 1948년 세계인권선언 발기로 작은 규모의 공격성(소수 집단, 여성, 아이, 동성애자, 동물)에 대한 폭력을 반대하는 목소리가 커졌다. 권리 혁명(Rights Revolution)으로 이 시기를 칭한다. 이제 평화는 어디로 향하게 될까?

작은 평화의 일상화

권리라고 주장해야 할 평화의 대상이 없어지며 일상화된 평화가 물이나 공기처럼 의식조차 안 되는 단계로 이행하는 시기다. 한국이 바로 이런 나라로 여겨지기 시작하고 있다. 청계천에 커다란 잉어와 백로가 살며 사람과 자연이 무심하게 병존한다. 일상에서 문 앞에 둔 택배가 그대로 있을 거란 믿음은 일반화되어 있다. 커피숍에서 값비싼 컴퓨터나 핸드폰으로 내 자리임을 알린다. 공항이나 콘서트에서 굳이 줄 서지 않고 여행용 가방이나 큰 옷으로 대신해도 없어질까 걱정하지 않는다. 우리에겐 당연한데 외국인이 한국에서 충격을 받는 장면들이다.

최근 한국에서 살고 싶어 하는 서구인들이 늘어나고 있는데, 그것도 엘리트층의 비율이 높다. 딸이 셋인 독일인 도시 설계가는 딸들이 밤에도 안심하고 외출하는 한국에서 살려고 직업을 한국에서 찾아 이사를 왔다. 인터뷰는 한국의 안전과 높은 의식 수준이 한국으로 향하게 하는 것을 보여준다. 어느 틈에 일상의 배경이 평화로 채워진 한국이다. 그래서인지 진정한 선진국은 한국이라는 외국인들이 늘어나고 있다.

네팔의 Z세대 반정부 시위대는 한국을 모델 국가로 생각하고 있다. 12.3 비상계엄도 축제 같은 시위로 극복하고 정권도 바꾸었다! 알고 보면 아프리카와 남미의 많은 나라들이 한국 바라기를 하고 있다. 어느 틈에 한국은 폭력의 시대를 넘어 새 척도인 평화의 시대를 여는 나라로 여겨진다. 운동화 끈을 바짝 조이며 우리에 대한 성찰을 깊이 해야 하는 이유다. 인간의 문명사는 폭력에서 멀어지다 평화로 나아갈 시점에 왔다는 여러 조짐을 보여준다. 한국이 원하든 원하지 않든 앞장서서 평화를 향한 선도국가 역할을 해야 한다. 이왕 할 거면 잘 해내자!

Is human nature a good angel or an evil devil? Where do humans stand between these two? It was a personal question that had plagued me for years. By chance, I came across a book called "The Better Angels of Our Nature." I immediately ordered it and began reading. It was my first time reading a book with 1,406 pages. Surely, for a book about human nature, this length shouldn't be too much? This book begins with an understanding of violence and shows the process of becoming a good human being.

History of Mass Murder

The title alone is chilling. However, humans survived and thrived despite the dangers of mass murder. Knowing the facts is the most objective way to understand the facts. The first change occurred 5,000 years ago, during the transition from foraging and hunting to the first agricultural civilization, when the rate of violent deaths decreased by a fifth. Historians call this the Pacification Process.

The second shift occurred over a period of about 500 years. From the late Middle Ages to the 20th century, the homicide rate in Europe dropped by a tenth. This was a period in which fragmented feudal territories consolidated into large kingdoms with centralized power and commercial infrastructure. This trend is known as the Civilizing Process.

The third shift occurred during the Age of Reason in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Enlightenment influenced the human mind. Organized movements to abolish despotism, slavery, dueling, judicial torture, superstitious killings, sadistic punishments, and cruelty to animals emerged for the first time. Systematic pacifism also emerged during this period, known as the Humanitarian Revolution.

The fourth major shift occurred during the 50 to 60 years following World War II, when the great powers and most developed nations avoided major wars. This period is known as the Long Peace. The fifth trend is the global decline in civil wars, mass murders, oppression by dictatorships, and terrorism since the end of the Cold War in 1989. Large-scale wars are being transformed into smaller-scale incidents. This is called the New Peace. Finally, with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, voices against violence against small-scale aggression (minorities, women, children, homosexuals, and animals) grew louder. This period is known as the "Rights Revolution." Where will peace lead now?

The Normalization of Small Peace

This is a time when the objects of peace that can be claimed as rights are disappearing, and peace, which has become so commonplace, is moving to a level that is as imperceptible as water or air. Korea is beginning to be seen as such a country. Large carp and egrets live in Cheonggyecheon Stream, and people and nature coexist indifferently. The belief that packages left at the door will be left untouched is widespread. In coffee shops, expensive computers and cell phones announce their presence. We don't have to wait in line at airports or concerts, and we don't worry about things disappearing, even if we just carry a suitcase or bulky clothes. These are commonplace for us, but these are scenes that shock foreigners in Korea.

Recently, a growing number of Westerners are eager to live in Korea, and a large proportion of them are elite. A German urban planner with three daughters moved here to find work in Korea, hoping to live in a country where their daughters can feel safe going out at night. The interview reveals how Korea's safety and high level of awareness are driving them to Korea. Korea's daily life has become filled with peace. Perhaps for this reason, a growing number of foreigners believe Korea is truly a developed country.

Generation Z anti-government protesters in Nepal consider Korea a model country. They overcame martial law on December 3rd with festival-like demonstrations and even changed the government! Indeed, many countries in Africa and South America are looking up to Korea. Korea is now seen as a country that has transcended an era of violence and ushered in a new era of peace. This is why we need to lace up our sneakers and reflect deeply on ourselves. The history of human civilization shows many signs that we are moving away from violence and toward peace. Whether we want it or not, Korea must take the lead and play a leading role in this peace process. If we're going to do it, let's do it well!
