의왕시의회 서창수 의원이 지난 8월 22일 ‘의왕시 모범운전자회 활동 지원 조례’ 제정을 위한 간담회를 개최해 관계기관과 시민 안전 강화를 위한 협력 방안을 논의했다.

이날 간담회에는 서창수 의원을 비롯한 의왕시의회 의왕경찰서, 의왕시청 관계자, 모범운전자회 회원 등이 참석했다. 참석자들은 조례 제정 필요성과 지원 근거 마련 방안을 집중적으로 검토했다.

조례안의 내용은 모범운전자회의 △출퇴근길 교통정리, △교통사고 예방 캠페인, △보행자 안전 보호, △재난 시 협력 활동 등 주요 봉사활동을 제도적으로 지원하는 것 등이 핵심이다. 특히 ‘도로교통법’ 제5조에 따른 경찰 보조업무 수행 시 모범운전자에게 여비를 지원할 수 있는 조항을 신설해 활동 사기 진작과 봉사 지속성을 확보하도록 했다.

서창수 의원은 “모범운전자회는 수십년간 의왕시민의 안전과 편의를 위해 묵묵히 봉사해왔다”며, “이번 조례 제정을 통해 봉사자들의 헌신을 제도적으로 뒷받침하고, 교통안전 환경을 더욱 공고히 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

현재 의왕시 모범운전자회는 약 60명의 회원이 활동하며, 의왕경찰서와 협력해 평일 출퇴근 시간대 혼잡 지역 23곳에서 교통질서 계도 활동을 펼치고 있다. 하지만 내손동·청계동 등 원거리 지역 이동 시 개인 차량을 이용한 비용이 발생해 여비 지원 필요성이 꾸준히 제기돼 왔다.
